A typical villa is probably located in a nice part of town with some green space round it, a swimming pool and a nice modern interior. But luxury villas, the ones you can only dream about, are something to behold. These are statements of grandeur and style intended to marry superb indoor and outdoor living with cutting edge decor and mind-blowing scenery. To get one you’ll need a pre-credit crunch executive-sized bank bonus and a suitably large plot in an exotic part of the world with room for the architect to wield some AutoCAD magic. Turkish-born, New York-based artist Deniz Ozuygur’s hilarious pieces tell sophisticated jokes that also, via crude, distorted, and disembodied forms, tap into a more innocent and tactile relationship we had with our bodies in grade school. Her Self High Five Machine is hysterical, as is her Alterations series, in which she messes with common kids’ items — Gummi Worms, Funyuns, a gum eraser — before repackaging them and returning them to the manufacturer. In Japan, when one makes squeezing gestures with both hands at chest level, one is gesturing that one wants candy — soft, round, bouncy candy. At least, that’s what this commercial would have us believe.
This concept by architect Luke Clayden is a facility that grows trees and crops from biodegradable commercial waste such as paper, cereal boxes, and cans.
Bringing statistics to life is not particularly easy, but this website does so with a creative brilliance. Using interactive animation and videos, you can look at a wide ranging set of sustainable global development data as the numbers change across space and and time. It promotes a statistically-founded world view, and somehow makes that fun.
They’re touring with Kimya Dawson; have Karen O and Nick Zinner from Yeah Yeah Yeahs playing on their record and have already been remixed by Brazilian powerhouse, CSS. And that’s not all. They are a two piece, and one of them is 11 and the other 13! They’re called Tiny Masters of Today. The Ramones would approve.
