Sydney-based Emily Valentine Bullock sculpts, primarily using feathers, which she collects from birds killed by cars and cats, and from people’s dead pets. More recently, she bought a trapping and killing machine to collect feathers from Australia’s registered pest, the Indian Mynah. From these oddly sourced materials, she creates very odd, but rather beautiful sculptures. Most of these are strange hybrid creatures — dogs with wings and bird-headed dolls. She also makes beaded and feathered brooches and bangles which can be purchased directly from her studio. What I love most about Bullock’s works is the way she juxtaposes the morbid with the appealing. Her hybrids are like taxidermied critters from a fantasy land, and any ghoulishness is offset by her use of colour, and the fact that the sculptures are just so damn cute.
Normally, stickers on fruit really bum me out, but these winners of Chiquita Banana’s Sticker Design Contest are awesome.
Japanese illustrator Symbolon works with his signature ‘shadow graphic’ style to create fashion illustrations for clients including BBC, Polaroid, Macy’s and American Airlines. Read more
Heavy metal and hip-hop are perhaps the most popular forms of rebellion for kids the world over. In Malaysia, metal — particularly black metal — has taken such a strong hold that the Fatwa Council there banned it, fearing that the music would compel listeners to rebel against religion. Contrary to the council’s intentions, black metal is as popular as ever in Malaysia, and is a recognizable cultural touchstone there, as indicated by the above clip from the 2005 film Filem Rock.

Carrying the torch at the moment is Hendrik Weber, aka Pantha du Prince, whose early 2007 release, This Bliss, landed on my doormat with a deep bass-kick and hasn’t left my iPod since. Read more
