I’ve been listening to The Move for the past few days. The British psych rock group, heavily influenced by the Beatles and Motown, were super popular in the UK, but never got traction in the US. The final line-up of the band went on to form Electric Light Orchestra. Their 1970 album, Shazam, which at times almost sounds like Zeppelin, at others like the more gospel-y Stones tunes, is one of the best classic records I’ve heard in a while — it’s the last release to feature original vocalist, the late Carl Wayne, who sounds like a cross between Neil Diamond and Robert Plant.

Chloe Aftel’s artistic vision is to ‘create new worlds filled with beauty and emotion through the medium of moving pictures’. Her photography initially consisted of one-frame movie stills, but it evolved into less production design-heavy, but still highly evocative, scenes with a strong narrative. She prefers to shoot with Polaroid film. With each shot and each subject, she attempts to capture an effortless sensuality and intimacy, focusing on the precise moment the image took place. Read more
I came across Nigel Cox’s work at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. I was blown away by his remarkable, detailed figures and his minimal compositions. His paintings are subtly powerful and filled with optimism and confidence. Montreal has Menace Ruine, and Toronto has Nadja, a formidable couple that churns out huge-sounding, bass and electronics-driven doom that draws your gaze up towards the stars just as old cathedral ceilings humble the faithful and make them think of the Almighty.

Nono Muaks makes some pretty quirky products that would make great novelty gifts, but I don’t quite get this Double TEE, which has no front or back: it’s a ’360 degree experience’.

Pitched as ‘Ulterior Motives in Contemporary Art’, Disorder Disorder is running until November 14 at Penrith Regional Gallery.
