The ECM label has been a long time favorite of mine. Apart from releasing and working with some of the most monumental jazz and avant-garde artists of the last forty years, such as Bill Frissel, Keith Jarrett and Jan Garbarek, it has also been dedicated to fostering new talent from all corners of the earth. It must be in the jeans. The offspring of musical hedonists Richard and Linda Thompson, Teddy Thompson is one hell of a talented songwriter. Since his debut self-titled album came out in 2000, Thompson has been busy working on collaborative projects (including the ‘I’m Your Man’ tribute to Leonard Cohen) and solo recordings. His latest album, Up Front & Down Low, is a typically skittish and melodic collection of folk tinged melodrama. We spoke to him recently. Read more
Autumn Whitehurst is one of my favourite illustrators. The Brooklyn-based artist’s work is clean yet sensual; the characters flawless but full of imperfection.
The very talented Jess Snow, the first video artist to be featured by Female Persuasion — the original site for provocative and political female artists — has created this ethereal short video for Lost At E Minor. Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris, or ‘Le Corbusier’ is considered by many to be the most influential architect of the twentieth century. His designs are responsible for urban structures around the world, from the grid-city of Chandigarh in India to London’s Barbican Centre, which is currently hosting an exhibition of his work. But to peg him as an architect overlooks an awe-inspiring body of work that also takes in art, literature and even a new system of measurement. With this display, the first serious UK solo exhibition of his work for twenty years, we can finally appreciate the scale of his contributions.
We got the inside word from Josh Diamond of New York experimental group, Gang Gang Dance, on the music that is moving him right now and he started off by propping the beautiful Ryuichi Sakamoto track, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence: ‘It’s just an amazing piece of music — serene, austere (in a heavy, beautiful way), emotional, a great mix of electronic sounds, patient, and a wonderful melody, with a quality of yearning for a better place. So 2008 brings its first great album of the year, the self-titled release from Susanne Sundfør, put out on a small label — Your Favourite Music — and a totally unsettling and challenging listen. Read more
Two of the nicest dudes I’ve ever met own and design the ridiculously cool clothing line, Kane & Unke. It’s pretty much all I have in my closet. They used to be sold exclusively at Metropark, but have recently fired up their own online store which I’m told will be up and running around July.

The return of the Brionvega rr226
Italian brand Brionvega has resurrected the classy Radiofonografio piece first created in 1965. The updated version is just like the original turntable/radio unit, but also has a CD/DVD player.
