I’m a huge fan of my friend Karlynn Holland’s art. She designed New York black metal band Krallice’s logo and did the logo and artwork for Dysrhythmia’s last album, Psychic Maps. She has a way with layering wispy and delicate lines to create dense textures and brooding atmosphere. Read more

My friend Kevin Hufnagel, who plays guitar in instrumental tech metal band Dysrhythmia with Krallice’s Colin Marston as well as the new line-up of legendary death metal band Gorguts, has been composing pieces for ukulele. Hufnagel is probably the only person in the world who can make a ukulele and a popsicle stick sound metal. I can’t wait until he releases this stuff on record.

Colin Marston seems hellbent on making other musicians feel worthless with his numerous and prolific projects that include black metal quartet Krallice (with Mick Barr), prog-tech-thrash band Behold… The Arctopus, and drone outfit Byla. One of his most intense endeavors, however, is instrumental trio Dysrhythmia, a band in which he took over bass duties for founding member Clayton Ingerson. Read more

Schmidt, Hammer and Lassen’s design for the Copenhagen national library is a celebrated structure in the already glittering design portfolio of northern Europe. The marble and glass façade of The Black Diamond (yes, that is what their national library is called) is an example of architectural brilliance, with even the angled walls designed to best mirror the city’s beautiful canals.

Don’t be afraid of the word retro. It has haunted us all from time to time, but one group that has embraced it with open arms is UK duo, La Roux. Their music is synth pop in the vein of Calvin Harris, Human League, The Eurythmics, and The Knife. There are quite a few of these young and ambitious pop starlets on the scene including Goldielocks. But La Roux takes the cake. Literally. I’m obsessed with their song In For the Kill and have a feeling summer will take it and make it a hit.
