Cupcake aficionados can now express their fetish for baked goods to neighbours with these giant cupcake polyethylene cases by Dutch designer Beerd van Stokkum. The extraordinarily proportioned ‘Sweet Cake’ case serves a multitude of purposes, ranging from a pet basket, flower pot and baby bath, to a generic place for storage. They’re made out of a thick synthetic material that’s conveniently available in every colour of the rainbow.

Dutch designer Sam van Veluw’s P-Tree is a pretty awesome alternative to standard port-o-potties. On top of that, it allows men to tap fulfill the primal urge to pee on trees without any of the mess. Too bad there’s no female version.

Dutch designer Lydia Dekker sells weird, handmade dolls, figurines, sculptures, and hats under the name Horriblesweet, which pretty much encapsulates what she’s going for. Read more
Jennifer Poon’s work gets graphic at times, but it’s always subtle and beautiful in the same way Egon Schiele’s work is.
I love the work of Joao Machado. It’s vibrant, distinctive, and compelling — broken bits of storylines immersed in drippings of bold shape and colour. Read more
Improv Everywhere strikes again with a spontaneous musical in a Los Angeles mall. Wireless microphones hooked up to the mall’s PA system ensured the feeding masses didn’t slip into Cinnabon-induced comas until after the show was over. Note especially the angry dude in sunglasses at about 2:51 — apparently he thinks nothing can ever top Rent.
I came across the Dongzhong cave school, which is situated in a Miao village within the Ziyun county, while watching a fascinating BBC documentary series about China the other night. The school, which was built in 1984 and caters for just under 200 students, is considered to be ‘a teaching branch for nearby resident units’. It looks stunning in its ornate beauty, and it must be one hell of a stimulating environment in which to learn. Read more
We spoke to Dopepope about his latest Metal Man Project: ‘In the fifth grade, I drew a comic called Metal Man about a humanoid robot that went crazy and pulled knives on people. It’s the most ridiculous thing ever. I was a kid! Anyway, I found the artwork and simply traced the head and the logo exactly as I had them and fell in love with the iconic shapes they’ve created’. He’s the king of the mash-up, a dance floor master, and the humblest guy you’ll meet. If you haven’t heard of him (unlikely), then go to his website right now and download his free mixes. He deejayed a show for us in 2000, right when his breakout CD, Uneasy Listening, dropped and I was floored. Who has the audacity to mix a Pat Benatar beat with Public Enemy vocals? This guy.

AJ Dimarucot is a Manila-based designer specializing in t-shirt graphics. His work is electric, bursting with colour and momentum, like something you’d see in the Big Bang section at the Museum of Natural History. Or something like that. Read more
