I was sure I’d misread the description when I first found these amazing drawings by Samuel Silva. How could they not be photos? Believe it or not, these colorful, photo-realistic images were created using ballpoint pens or graphite and charcoal. What’s the secret to the amazing resemblance to photographs? Huge amounts of time and incredible attention to detail. For example, Silva’s portrait of the red haired girl was created using only seven pens but it took him more than 30 hours to complete.

Who is Jensine Eckwall? The answer to that question has been quite pleasant. Jensine is a recent gradute from the School of Visual Arts, who’s work has already been published by clients such as The New York Times and Plansponsor. She swept the Society of Illustrator’s Student Competitions with Scholarships awards, and has a promising future ahead of her. Her drawings remind me of vintage children book’s illustrations with a timeless quality about them.

Dizzy and Tabs are punk rock cats who like books and libraries and making things out of stuff thoughtless people have thrown out. They don’t like eminent domain and things that would ruin the alley. What I really think? It’s about doing the best you can with what you’ve got. Cats In The Alley is updated Sundays and Thursdays.

After 20 years or so of making provocative disturbing art, Makoto Aida is currently having a retrospective exhibition of his huge body of work at Mori Art Museum — which, in them, coincidentally run up a high body count of mostly expressionless salarymen and school girls with Aida favoring dark themes like dismemberment, mutilation and cannibalism. He just has a way with making art pieces that are both massive and intricate.

Jason D’Aquino refers to himself as a miniaturist and no one can doubt that when you see the size of his detailed graphite drawings of icons of pop culture, common objects, and his own creations that are only a inch or so in size which he creates with high powered magnifiers. He chooses to work on found surfaces such as strike-on-front matchbooks, 18th century animal-skin vellum, and antique ledger pages. His search for these found ‘canvases’ has led him to strange corners of the world and to some unique treasures. He recently unearthed a hand-quilled, illustrated whaling manuscript from St. Petersburg Russia, which made its way to Christies Auction House in New York City.

Belgian multidisciplinary visual artist Ben Heine started his Pencil vs Camera project in 2010, an inspirational juxtaposition of photography and photography. Every captured image has his fingers holding up a penciled drawing that overlaps whatever is being photographed. Love how a meeting of two worlds leads to the creation of a new one with a brand new reality. Also love the shot of the cat with twice the number of eyes of most cats.

Nick Chaboya is a well-known San Francisco-based tattoo artist who is involved in numerous creative endeavors outside the realm of tattooing. Raking Light Projects recently produced a triptych of Chaboya’s works titled Fruit of Thy Womb, Flower of Life and Special Spirit. Originally created with watercolor on paper, they are available on rakinglightprojects.com as limited edition, digital composite prints.

The visual treatment of these works is inspired by nineteenth century medical and biological prints in which scientists of the era conducted detailed drawings of their subject matter, often bifurcated and delineated in an effort to reveal new truths about the nature of life. Chaboya treats the pomegranate as a representation of the mystery of the lifecycle while also shedding light on the possibilities that surround the process of rebirth and renewal.

I wish to evole a sense of mimicry gone fantasy since imitation can provide an understanding not only of the structures and systems that surround us in everyday life, but also an opportunity for the exploration of the possibilities of restructuring the systems to construct new identities and functionalities.
