I love the first image on the website of illustrator Anna Melcon Bond: the snarling bushes and the little dog in the wagon snarling back as his owner blithely skips along trailing the wagon behind her. Melcon Bond’s work oozes with wit. There’s not an image of hers that I wouldn’t tack on my wall for a good laugh and a smile.
Seattle-based design studio, Dumb Eyes, have some awesome t-shirt designs, logos and typography up on their website, all of which showcases their minimalist, brightly colored, and tightly patterned aesthetic. Read more
I generally don’t like t-shirts so much, but I really like the ones at The Martinez Design Project, the Etsy store for designer Leslie Martinez. Her work transcends the glut of silkscreened clip art in the DIY aesthetic.
Sparks’ album Kimono My House is a demented mix of hard rock, pop, glam, new wave, and baroque pop. Why this record never caught on in the States I’ll never know. The songs will get stuck in your head and prevent you from sleeping. Oh yeah, and the keyboard player has a nice mustache too, as evidenced by this track above — This Town Ain’t Big Enough.
As a child, I took piano exams in over-sized white rooms, on baby grand pianos that felt unfamiliar and echoed strangely as someone across the room observed me in silence. It felt clinical, intimidating and completely devoid of warmth. Last week, I started noticing upright pianos, some painted haphazardly, others respectfully untouched plonked in the most unlikely places throughout Sydney. There was one on the edge of the baby pool at the local swimming pool, with a young girl in a rainbow striped dress tapping out a happy but disjointed melody; another shaded under a tree at the park on the way home. Pitched as ‘Ulterior Motives in Contemporary Art’, Disorder Disorder is running until November 14 at Penrith Regional Gallery. It’ll be well worth the trip out west of Sydney: the Australian, Japanese, American and European cast reads like a warriors of street art roundup and includes Mike Giant, Ed Templeton, Anthony Lister [artwork above], Ozzie Wright, and Jonathan Zawada. Now this is fun. This 3D watch dial actually jumps to life. The dial is a modern version of the 19th century art form of lithophanes: carved porcelain sheets that, when lit, deliver astoundingly detailed images. When the pusher is activated, the dial springs to life in 3D, with an LED light and afterglow effect. Read more
