I recently watched this movie because I’m a huge fan of Stanley Kubrick. It talks about the (possible) hidden meanings the director put in the film, The Shining. Things such as his involvement in faking the Apollo 11 moon landing or his thoughts on the slaughter of the American Indians. They even talk about watching the movie forwards and backwards at the same time and show some cool examples of how this works together. While some of the ideas seem a bit far fetched, I must admit it was pretty fascinating.

Adam Rigley and Bumbleton Communications make films about interesting people. Their recent fully funded Kickstarter project is just that. It’s a film about a 69 year-old man who owns a bar in Tucson, Arizona, and who legally goes by the name of God. He’s run for Mayor four times, partied with Burt Reynolds and Arnold Schwarzenegger, walks around town naked, boxed with Sugar Ray Leonard, and will fire-brand an image of his face on your body for .50 cents off drinks for the rest of your life. This is a mockumetary about beatboxing made by the highly talented Australian beatboxer, Tom Thum. Although the mockumentary is aimed at beatbox enthusiasts, I think anyone who watches it will get a good laugh out of it. And no, it’s not serious, for all those people who fail to recognize satire.

I just caught Swiss-German theatre group PENG! Palast’s brilliant production the holycoaster s(HIT) circus the other day. It starts out with an entertaining behind-the-scenes ‘documentary’ of the group’s earnest attempt to collaborate with Israeli dancers, before plunging into a relentless stage performance that confronted the audience full-on with deeply uncomfortable issues of the prejudices and stereotypes in our lives. Every single one of us was cringing in our seats throughout the performance. Pretty incredible stuff.

This documentary series was created over a span of three years as Mark Menjivar traveled across the United States to photograph the interiors of refrigerators in homes. The results are like portraits, each reflecting how jobs, economic status, and possibly, life experiences affect what foods we consume. I like the little facts he includes about each individual. My favorite is probably the gallery owner who is noted to be, “not very good at small talk.” There’s a milk to people ratio of 5:1.

Earlier this year, French artist and photographer JR visited Los Angeles for another campaign tied in to his Wrinkles of the City project. Filmmaker and photographer, theonepointeight, was fortunate enough to document the entire process and here we have a short film titled, JR: The Wrinkles of Los Angeles, that details the work and effort put together by JR as well as a view into the streets, buildings, and people that make up the massive city of Los Angeles.

One of my favourite bands has just launched a Kickstarter call to complete a documentary that has been 16 years in the making, including some newfound camcorder footage of the band in their early days. They’ve made their pledge promises as fun as their songs too — a pledge of $1 or more would make you ‘a friend to man and you will not be forgotten’. Or you can pledge $1,000 and own either the 10 ft dress that frontman Kevin Barnes wore throughout the Hissing Fauna tour, or a tear-away jacket he wore on the Late Night with Conan O’Brien show.

She has remained one of the most enduring, pioneering and subversive performance and installation artists of the 21st century. I just watched her new documentary, The Artist is Present, which covers the history of her working life as an artist, her relationships, and childhood experiences, and the entire documentary is based on her latest exhibition that ran at the MoMa in New York, entitled The Artist is Present.

Marina sat for three months in the same chair in the gallery and the public was able to join in the exhibition by sitting across from her at a table (which was later removed) and staring in to the artists eyes. Some people cried, some laughed, some took off their clothes. his documentary brought me to tears as I was witness to Marina’s incredible life story and her astonishing works. I watched one person after another file in to sit silently across from the artist and the sheer power and emotion of her work is something you can’t miss. If you don’t know who she is, don’t worry. She’s a discovery worth making.

Unspoken Northwest is a project that I have been working on for a little over six months now. I’ve spent the time traveling around the region to create this video collection of poetry readings from poets residing in the Northwest. They are shown reading their works in places important to them, and/or their work within the city they live in, because I think it is interesting to see how one’s surroundings affect the work they produce.

I got to know about the brilliant Icelandic musician Ólafur Arnalds from music documentary Press Pause Play — also brilliant and viewable in its full glory on Vimeo. There was this magical moment in the documentary where his song Ljósið soared to clouds dancing about underwater clouds. The excerpt came from footage in the music video directed by Argentinian motion graphics designer Esteban Diacono. This is that moment.

If Jiro Dreams of Sushi, the documentary film that has been making waves in the arthouse film circuit of late, had a companion piece to open the film, it would be this. In this 8-min short featuring Japanese comedy troupe The Rahmens, sushi trivia, etiquette and traditions are hilariously jumbled with outright fiction and exaggerated reverence — even the ‘meido’ from these evergreen kitschy maid cafes makes a guest appearance.

Documentary films and music are the two ways I do most of my learning. This documentary is an incredible mix of both, and unlike any documentary I have ever seen. Rodriguez is an overlooked 1970‘s musician (sounds like an American version of Donovan), who recorded a couple albums and then vanished. He didn’t have much success in the States, but was huge in South Africa, bigger than the Rolling Stones. The film explores the myths of what happened to Rodriguez and tries to solve the story of his whereabouts, while exposing the audience to the unknown and incredible Rodriguez catalogue.
