More often than not, a “live” electronic show translates into a lifeless DJ playing Ableton off a laptop. It doesn’t seem like the best fit for music that’s so visceral and emotive. Martyn - an electronic musician based in the “sleepy DC suburbs” - found a way to visualize the music he’s created for his forthcoming album. He teamed up with two visual artists to conceptualize ‘The Air Between Your Words’, a live A/V show that emulates the ethereal melodies and intertwining layers of Martyn’s soundscapes.

With his longtime creative conspirator, illustrator/painter Jeroen Erosie(who created the artwork and live show for Martyn’s last album, ‘Ghost People’), and film director/visual artist Xavier Magot, the trio created an immersive, projection-based live show that contains elements of typography, free hand artwork and live action imagery. Taking the viewer/listener on a journey from birth to death, earth to space. Their video trailer gives a sneak peek of what’s to come, but be a bit careful if you watch it at work (it is Xavier Margot, after all).

Darkness is the first single from a new project I’ve started with Matt Van Schie from Australian band Van She. We met in Parisian club The Social Club in 2010 where we were both DJing. We hit it off and started sending tracks to each other, getting to know each other. Then Matt was working on this song, and I said ‘send me the parts’, so he did. I did some stuff on it, he loved it and I said, “let’s start a band”. Du Tonc was born.

It’s quite interesting being on different sides of the planet; Skype is our new best friend. It was exciting when I’d work on a section, send it to Matt and he would work on a section and send it back. It was a bit like Christmas waiting for a present to come in the post. It was very easy putting it together, I think, because we had time on our own to work out parts. No pressure. The only challenging bit was when I had to mix it. Would have been quite handy having Matt in the room with me, and would probably have been mixed quicker.

When wanting to hear new and inspiring electronic music, you should look no further than the new record label Bromance. Combining music and art, music and culture, and people through music, the label was started in November 2011 by ‘DJ to the DJ’s – Brodinski. It’s been a hectic year, with Bromance just dropping their seventh release, the aptly named Bromance #7. The two track EP contains blazing club tracks by Brodinski inspired by ‘attraction’ (we mean everything from hypnotic beats to that girl on the dance floor you just can’t keep watching). Dance Like Machines takes that attraction and focus it on lap dancers and strippers, while Hypnotize is a proper club track – techno with a little bit of acid. Put on your dancing shoes, people.

Brisbane-based DJ Sampology is set to dazzle audiences on his upcoming Around the Globe tour. We caught up with him to discuss the impending tour.

LAEM: The last time we spoke was just before the release of Doomsday Deluxe. What’s been happening since?
S: Since we spoke last, I toured the Super Visual Apocalypse show around Australia and New Zealand, which ended in a really memorable weekend at [music festival] Splendour in the Grass, and then came over to West Canada for the first time to play some shows. At the moment I’m in Calgary for the last day before heading back to Brisbane.

LAEM: You’re one of a small number of Australian acts playing the [Australian music festival] Big Day Out. How does it feel to be on the line up?
S: I had such an awesome time when I did the BDO tour in 2011. It’s a really great crew that’s involved in it so I’m looking forward to getting back and playing to everyone who comes out for a big day of music. I’m good mates with Nina and Mat Cant, so it’ll be great to have tour hangs with those guys.

LAEM: What can you tell us about the new single?
S: ‘Around The Globe’ is a collaboration with UK reggae/dancehall vocalist Serocee, who I’ve been a fan of for a while. In 2010, I saw him and Toddla T do a set together at big chill in the UK and I remember thinking at the time I wanted to reach out to him at some point in the future. There’s a bunch of killer remixes coming out really soon on the package and something else special I cant announce right now to come in a month or so.

LAEM: Is the new tour still AV/DJ?
S: This tour is DJ shows only. The last couple of years have developed into a pattern where one season I will do DJ shows followed by the season after doing AV sets. I have a big appreciation for being able to do both and I had been travelling around doing DJ shows before I even started the visual aspect.

Illustrator and dublab DJ, Justin McNulty, aka Kutmah, was recently deported from his homeland of the United States to Great Britain. His Scottish father and Egyptian mother moved to the US when Kutmah was 12, but their son was never naturalized. So after keeping Kutmah in detention for more than two months in 2010, US immigration authorities sent him back ‘home’ to England, even though Kutmah considers himself a Los Angeles native.

While he isn’t allowed re-entry to the United States, Kutmah hasn’t let his experience affect his work. At least, not for the worse. For the second volume of the Worldwide Family series on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings, Kutmah has curated an intense compilation album featuring artful beats from his friends and fellow music-makers. Flying Lotus, the Darkhorsemen, and Gaby Hernandez are just a few who are part of Kutmah’s worldwide family. Together, it’s a profound mix with a rare perspective from a man whose statelessness continues to facilitate cultural globalization.

This week, London-based DJ Damian Lazarus will be on the American side of the Atlantic playing his refined underground style in a few select cities. Involved with music at an early age, Lazarus began as a music reviewer, co-established the City Rockers label and eventually set up his own label, Crosstown Rebels. Having so much exposure to the music has allowed Lazarus to cultivate his own unique style, marked by flawless sets that Lazarus himself describes as ‘twisted, raw, deep underground techno’. In addition to Lazarus, Bill Patrick will be playing one last New York set before he permanently relocates to Europe.
