Working out of Texas, photographer Brittanie Pendleton captures slithers of untouched serenity. Her photographed world is slightly unsettling for its moodiness and ambiguity, but its grittiness and muted colors are beautiful and engaging. Of her work, she says, ‘I mostly do digital photography, self-portraits and landscapes, with the occasional kitty portrait. My photos focus on everyday situations, and finding beauty in the mundane. A lot of my work is also centered around sex, sometimes subtle and sometimes not so subtle’.

I’m one of those people who lament the death of analog film as a medium, not because I romanticize the process, but because I love the unpredictable imperfections inherent in non-digital formats. For the longest time, I’ve used nothing but cheap, disposable 35mm cameras. But I’ve also found that older digital cameras create wonderfully gritty images. The cheapest and most lo-fi camera available is the one on my phone, and I’ve recently discovered that it’s perfect for the kind of pictures I love to take. The graininess and rough lines of the photos I’ve made with my phone add a layer of loneliness and isolation much the way the warped lens and poor film stock of disposable cameras does. The hyper-sharp quality of new digital cameras just makes things look plastic to me.
