Roger Ballen is an American geologist, living in South Africa, who is very much on top of the photography world. He directed the stunning video for Die Antwood’s I Fink U Freaky, amongst other notable achievements. Yes, he’s a true master.

Through the obscene and brilliant faith/artistic movement that is Zef, South African hip-hop duo Die Antwoord kind of parody and embrace their own ridiculousness. Lady Gaga asked Die Antwoord to open for her; Yolandi Vi$$er and Ninja responded by making a video for their single Fatty Boom Boom where Gaga wears a meat dress, finds a cricket up her vagina and gets eaten by a lion. There was a twitter squabble between Gaga and Antwoord over the results. They’ve also worked the beast from the Book of Revelations but with Nicki Minaj, Kanye West and Jay Z’s heads into the background.

My favourite South African photographer, Melanie Cleary, is known for the subtlety in which she wrestles with characters’ physical identity and self-presentation, as well as her pictures of Die Antwoord before they turned themselves into an Internet troll. She has two new bodies of work, Youth and New Years Day, North Beach, Durban 2012, which I find myself staring at more than the newsfeed page on Facebook.

Capetonian anti-heroes Die Antwoord brought a healthy dose of Zef to the Late Show with Dave Letterman this week when they performed their latest single, Fink You Freeky. After the Lana Del Rey episode, they probably figured uppers beat downers for this kind of thing. As an Afrikaans dude, I grin when phrases like ‘ek’s ‘n lanie, jy’s ‘n gam’ enter the global vernacular, not to mention ‘tokelosi’.

Die Antwoord is to your eyes and ears what a rusted nail is to a bare foot — once the initial pain and panic subsides and the tetanus shot administered. Well, maybe not like a rusted nail. Actually, I’m not really sure what they’re like. Immediately after viewing the video clip for their song Ninja, I cleaned my face and called a South African friend.

‘So, this Die Antwoord …’ I asked with interest. ‘Oh yes, aren’t they wonderful! Have you seen the interview where Yo-Landi has a mouse on her shoulder?’, she squealed with delight. ‘Errr, no’, I answered and quickly hung up. Die Antwoord walk a very blurred line between reality and LSD induced comas. They recently played to a packed audience on their first Coachella festival. Maybe we’re the ones in an LSD coma? In what other mental state can Justin Bieber be a worldwide phenomenon? Big up Die Antwoord.
