I wasn’t familiar with the work of photographer Katy Grannan until recently, but the more I see her work, the more she reminds me of Diane Arbus, the celluloid high priestess of degeneration. While Grannan shares Arbus’ intrepid gaze, this Yale-educated artist chooses and frames her subjects so they seem a little more flattened by consumerism, a little further from the edge than Arbus’ people, but still in a state of ruin. Daniel Davidson’s Mirror Drawings are constructed using watercolor pencil. He draws one side of the image in its entirety, then sprays the paper with water, folds it in half and buffs it vigorously. The paper is sprayed and buffed repeatedly until the drawn half is successfully printed on the opposing side, creating a completely symmetrical image. Read more
Beijing-based electronic music duo FM3 have gone a long way with their Buddha Machine, a loop-playing box inspired by similar machines found in buddhist temples across China. They recently rolled out a new line with translucent colors as well as an app for your iPhone or iPad.

This café, cookie shop, ice cream place in Cobble Hill Brooklyn is all about flavor, aroma and family. Their cookies and ice cream are absolutely to-die-for, and the place is so well-designed, painted in vintage colors with old family pictures printed on the walls, that you’ll want to indulge yourself for more than just a few minutes. Try their Whoopies and Lucia cookies. They’re my favourite.

The Futurebirds are an unruly band of boys from Athens, Georgia, but they might as well have been reared in the backwoods of Woodstock by Levon Helm himself. Their debut release, Hampton’s Lullaby, is out on July 13 via Autumn Tone Records.
