This is a short film capturing 24 local artists, cooks, thinkers and musicians as they came together to showcase Detroit’s spirit, performing inside the downtown People Mover train one day in April.

We like this blog, Silent Cities. We like seeing images of some of the most noisy and crowded places in the world momentarily bathed in silence. There is something both serene and eerie about these scenes. The images above and below are from London, Sydney and Detroit.

Jonathon Kambouris was raised outside Detroit, Michigan. Of this series, Last Meals, he writes: ‘The series visually documents the face and last meal of convicted killers. I created this project to explore the interesting and unique relationship humans have with food and used the last meal as a metaphor to raise questions about the death penalty’.

Detroit really is as desolate as people make it out to be. Have you ever seen an abandoned high-rise with its windows smashed out? You can see that there. People have been arsoning their houses to collect insurance. Artist Catie Newell, in collaboration with nonprofit Imagination Station, has embarked on a project called Salvaged Landscapes in which she collects burned and scrapped lumber from decimated neighborhoods and creates installations in uninhabitable buildings.

When i was a kid, I thought graffiti was awesome. Not much has changed. I also thought it would be awesome to paint my parent’s living room. They refused, repeatedly. RETNA and Richard Colman probably shared the same dream. Only, in place of the Black Flag bars that would’ve landed me in military school, they dreamed in lush calligraphy and bold geometrics.

The duo’s dreams came true when Juxtapoz invited them to paint one of the Detroit homes purchased from their 15th Anniversary Benefit — a triumphant effort to breathe artistic life into the ailing industrial metropolis, as evidenced here.
