James Dean somewhat lives on in Brad Pitt, while Princess Diana somewhat lives on in Kate Middleton — it’s like whoever lived in the past went on to live on in the lives of their present-day counterparts.

Vancouver-based design and production firm Molo creates functional furniture, lighting, and room dividers from pleated paper. Their products are ingeniously made using a unique honeycomb crease technique, which creates strong and durable designs.

Molo’s work is even featured in MoMA’s permanent collection, and now they are focusing their efforts on creating temporary solutions for disaster relief. It’s amazing how a material as mundane as paper can be so versatile.

This is brilliant. Business Insider Australia recently compiled a gallery of creative staff photos from ad agencies that had us going ‘Way… Out…’. My favorite has to be from Sagmeister & Walsh, with the team wearing loose astronaut suits in one picture and then leaping into the air with just their helmets on in the next one. Pretty cool.

I have fallen in love with the seemingly simple design of the inflatable furniture designed by Lambert Kamps. First, there’s the soft pillow tent. Bringing back sentiments of childhood fort building, the structure stands tall with the help of over 100 inflatable air bags. Right after I found the pillow tent, I came across the swollen, inflatable furniture. It made me crack a huge smile when I read the description as being ’inspired by the rise in obesity of people in the Western consumer society’. How accurately clever.

Life in Five Seconds takes 200 notable happenings in the world — historical events, inventions, lives, places, animals and icons — and strips away all the useless stuff to present the basic bits in beautifully minimalistic pictograms. Matteo Civaschi and Gianmarco Milesi from Milan-based design and ad studio H-57 are behind it. Clever.

Wow, wow, wow, just check out these gorgeous geometric clothing racks by Tongtong. Called Les Ailes Noires, the display range thrived recently at Annie Aime, a fashion retail space with bold artwork by Pascal Paquette lining the walls. They seem to pop out and sink in at the same time. Very pretty.

As a student web designer, I immediately smiled at the clever word play used in this series of HTML and CSS tag posters. Greek graphic designer Costas Papaconstantinou is literally ‘applying tags in life.’ His use of colourful expressions has combined coding with typography and graphic design to showcase a wonderful series of humour and creativity.

In this poster series by London digital production studio, INK, WWII-era propeller planes are carefully paired with their canine counterparts in order to transform their familiar hard-edged, silhouettes into a more adorable craft: a beagle, a schnauzer and a golden retriever. The beauty of Dogfighters stems from reimagining key details from each plane into recognisable features from the selected dog breed. For example, a cockpit becomes a pair of furry eyebrows, a propeller becomes a wet dog’s nose.

With his work Knockers, UK artist Tom Gallant decided to give the classic porn magazine — with their garishness, aesthetically-displeasing layouts and all — a redesign. He drew his input from an entire issue of one such magazine and transcribed its text and images into a grid that reduced these to their average colours. Of course, most of these turned out to be fleshy tones. The resulting 92-page book is both ridiculous and sublime.

It’s amazing what we can make stuff out of these days. Dutch company Kazmok, for instance, makes an entire bag range — such as briefcases, travel bags and even iPad sleeves — out of rubbery conveyor belts. The materials are sourced from the flower industry, postal depots, distribution centers and the recycling industry.

Its founder Dinand Stufkens says the products are symbolic of throwaway culture — and there’s a certain coolness in how the conveyer belts move along the distribution line to, well, become new consumer products.

Paris-based graphic designer and artist Nacho Ormaechea contrasts photos by filling the silhouette of ordinary people in urban settings with a dissonant image or illustration, often taken from nature. With his pictures, he tells charming stories that can be interpreted by the viewer and induce moments of introspection. Solitude and reflection are important to Ormachea: he asserts that we need space and distance from all the information invading our lives and feel free to create and express ourselves.

Advertising can be an eyesore if not done properly, something that many city dwellers encounter on a daily basis. IBM and Ogilvy & Mather France had an idea. If cities were smarter, then life in cities would be better.

Their solution was to create ads with purpose. By adding a simple curve, they gave advertising a new function – bench, shelter and a ramp. Their campaign is more likely to resonate with people as it has taken the idea of utility and applied it to the traditional outdoor ad. Their goal is to encourage forward-thinking individuals and politicians to consider how to make their neighbourhoods smarter and better.

We’ve seen Excel art, but most of these get away with being boxy and somewhat amateurish, since the Microsoft spreadsheet tool was never built for art. Not so with Japanese digital artist Tatsuo Horiuchi — who, at a respectable 73 years of age, has crafted intricate art pieces in the past decade using Excel. These are just extraordinary.
