Based out of Denver, Colorado, Nick Sparks is an editorial and art photographer. After picking up a film camera at age 20 and shooting landscapes on Kodak Tri-x film for a few years, Sparks decided to ditch film and start shooting editorial work using digital format. He composes vivid, emotionally charged portraits, drawing the viewer in with intense, sometimes dark imagery which produces an emotional connection between the viewer and his photographs.

West meets East in these incredible bamboo sculptures by Tetsunori Kawana. Each huge structure in the Denver Botanic Garden is elegantly curved and winding. They were constructed by a painstaking process of splitting and bending each piece of bamboo. The installation is a growing changing thing. Though the bamboo is no longer living, it changes with the seasons, age, and weather. A gradual shift occurs as is begins drying out and changing color. Kawana’s attempt at recreating and manipulating nature is a fascinating concept

I was recently asked to do an outdoor Ink Off with another illustrator for the AIGA in downtown Denver. They set up a huge wall covered in brown craft paper and we had one hour to create a mural using a bucket of ink and some big brushes. It was interesting to work in front of a crowd and see their reactions to the improvised work. What a blast! You might find a photo of this on my Facebook page Tom Pounders, or the other one, entitled Pounders Ink.

Grindcore is usually super fast and spazzy, with bands of the genre trying to pound out as many notes as possible within songs that are never longer than a minute or two, but Denver’s Clinging to the Trees of a Forest Fire slow things down every so often to show you how menacing their riffs truly are. The vocals are also as good as they come for this genre, with frontman Ethan changing flawlessly from high-pitched screeches to gutteral, Cookie Monster growls without the help of any effects.

The Air Forest is made to work with, and not against, its environment, allowing for wind, weather, and the sun to shift it. The easy set-up (all that is required to do is set the anchors) and interactive light display inside the 35 hexagonal pillars allows for shade, visual texture, and a mimicry of the surrounding environment. And because it’s not a permanent adjustment, we may well see the Air Forest at concerts and festivals in the years to come.
