Blank City is a documentary that I want to actually step into and go back in time. It’s an oral history of a group of renegade NYC indie filmmakers from the 70s and mid 80s. Think Nick Zedd, Jim Jarmusch, and John Waters, with commentary by Debbie Harry, Steve Buscemi, Thurston Moore, and Fab 5 Freddy. Now playing at IFC Center NYC.

Lisa Jane Persky takes beautiful, beautiful, photographs. To be fair, she also took my book jacket photo, but that doesn’t make her work less amazing. She covers a ton of ground: visit her site to look at vintage, CBGB’s era Debbie Harry, but stay for everything else.

 

Alexei Lyapunov and Lena Ehrlich must have a really calm hand and a vivid fantasy. At least, that’s what’s needed for their kind of sophisticated paper cut art. The two Russians from Novosibirsk create complex scenes out of colored paper. The result is pretty amazing and brings you right back into childhood. Read more

The Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project involved fourteen countries around the world filling crates with the best of their local nightlife and exchanging their country’s crate with another. We were there all the way, following Australia’s involvement. And the final stage, with Brazil and Australia swapping crates, was a beauty! As this video attests.
