Last week, I saw Brown Wing Overdrive open for Black Pus (the solo project of Lightning Bolt’s Brian Chippendale). The band — which formed in DC and relocated to NYC — uses electronics, found objects, banjos, duck calls, jaw harps, and whatever else they can get their hands on to make jerky, syncopated, yelpy noise. At times, referencing shamanistic traditions, at others drawing from kabuki, the band doesn’t quite sound like anyone else on their label, Tzadik. I wish more experimental bands would play around with vocals the way these guys do.

I wonder how many guitar picks Jimi Hendrix used while he was alive? Probably not the 5,000 it took Ed Chapman, a notable British mosaic artist, to put this plectrum portrait together. It recently sold for £23,000, which will be used for cancer research. Read more
There’s been an interesting trend recently in print and advertising work in particular away from the perfect symmetry and airbrushed cleanliness of vector art and back towards a looser form of hand-drawn illustration. I see it everywhere, from the middle pages of highbrow pop culture publications to the style sections of local broadsheets. And yet, it’s unexpected, especially so soon after the wave of vector art which swamped the print world just a few years back. Read more

Found photos are nothing new, but Internet K-Hole is a nice little blogspot that has some pretty choice images sure to suck you in, including some rarely-seen ones of people like Nirvana, NWA, and Fabio. Some images are NSFW, but they’re not that bad. Read more
It goes without saying that Hip Hop has taken a few very low hits in the past decade. Thanks to the likes of 50 Cent and company, it accounts for around 40% of all music sold in America. It’s a huge industry. So where does that leave Hip Hop artists doing something a bit different? Lord T and Eloise wear wacky outfits, make crazy music and bring a whole lot of fun back into Hip Hop. What’s more, they’ve started a new genre called ‘Aristocrunk’. Watch out!
To be honest, I can’t bring myself to care about the new TSA scanners in airports. It’s not like they can’t already see and know everything about you already. However, I love these garments with the 4th Amendment printed on them in metallic ink so that the text show up clearly on scanners.
