Woven Hand is more proof that contemporary Christian music doesn’t have to suck. Like all great songwriters singing about faith, frontman David Eugene Edwards isn’t afraid to tackle death, love, doubt, and fear in his lyrics. In fact, contrary to the stereotype of Christian rock being glassy-eyed, kumbaya, and touchy-feely, Edwards’ music is almost terrifyingly dark and brooding, infused with mournful hymnal passages, droning strings, and steel guitars that sound like the lonely desert.

‘I have been trying to go with my whims. Fuck it, let’s make an iPod album’. This statement from Team Genius leader Drew Hermiller was the jumping off point in the creation of the band’s debut self-titled full-length album, one of the most interesting and eclectic pop records of the year. ‘Basically it’s a reaction to the modern way music is consumed and listened to’, Hermiller says. ‘The idea of an album with a focused sound and a complete statement kind of gets lost now-a-days. Everyone shuffles around, so I thought “why not write an album that does the same thing?” Luckily, the band did an awesome job of keeping up with it’.
