The opening of Danish one-man black metal band Angantyr’s third full-length, Haevn, is a somber, minute-and-a-half, double-stopped cello solo that breaks into a harsh blast of the iciest, harshest bm I’ve ever heard. This is one of my favorite moments in music ever. Check it out on their MySpace page.
I saw a show of Cherie Weaver’s a few years back at a local café in Austin and absolutely fell in love with her style and the little goat/human/squirrel creatures that inhabit many of her pieces. So much so that I commissioned her to do the artwork for my album, One Thing Right.
Moscow, China, Armenia, Finland. So many destinations that Laure Fissore, a young French illustrator, has elegantly drawn. Her latest book, New York, is full of posey with very realistic images of the Big Apple: a touch of colour here and there, the yellow cab, the wonder wheel, Chinatown. I am already transported.
The Deal sisters have dropped off the indie-rock radar of late, but this clip of them covering Hank Williams’ I Can’t Help It reminds us why we all loved them so much back in the day. Incidentally, the Breeders are set to release their new album, Mountain Battles, in April.
Old-school, timeless French is the vibe of creative agency Mother London’s latest campaign for Stella Artois. Titled Recyclage de Luxe, these massive, 1960s vintage-esc posters lining the walls of London’s tube aim to unabashedly promote Stella’s green credentials. The vibrant, revival ads, along with other campaign gimmicks, are all part of the brand’s efforts to boost its environmental image. Read more
The Big Picture’s photo essays are some of the best around: insightful, timely and often confronting in the way great photo essays are. Complementing The Big Picture is The Big Caption, a parody site ‘wherein jokes and statements are made using typography’. Sometimes insightful and always snarky, it pairs poignant photography with blunt observations using a thread of hostility. Read more
New Mexico group, Alaska in Winter’s The Homeless And The Hummingbirds is a stunningly beautiful, slowburning song, featuring Beirut’s Zach Condon on trumpet.
The new Melbourne-based football themed t-shirt collection — GFUNK&BATZ — is a lot of fun. Driven by the designers’ passion for the game, the shirts will have you leaping around like Kewell or Beckham (if that’s what you want) in no time. Read more
