I’m off to Toronto this weekend to check out a few of the films that are screening as part of the Toronto International Film Festival [TIFF] — a charitable, not-for-profit cultural organization. All up, there will be 335 films from 64 countries screening over ten days, so I’ll be scrambling to fit a few in, but some of the highlights include Mr. Nobody [photo above], ‘which tells the story of Nemo, the world’s oldest man’; Crab Trap, ‘a meditative look at daily life in a remote village on the Pacific coast of Colombia’; and She, A Chinese, ‘a hybrid of documentary, creative writing, visual poetry and cinema’.
It takes guts to be simple. Overcrowding, overworking and over-thinking are far easier. London-based artist and illustrator James Joyce shows how good color choice, clever concepts, and a keen eye for type can get you work with big clients, such as Wallpaper, Nike and Penguin Books, to name a few. Vague and painterly, the work of Brooklyn artist Ryan Rozowski is populated with anonymous crowds and objects that lead you to feel as if you might be eavesdropping, albeit from a good way back. It’s like peering through the tiniest crack in the wall. Read more
Oh man, what I wouldn’t give to be able to sing like Neil Finn. His voice rasps with all the sincerity and integrity of a thousand heartfelt melodies. Heck, I’d probably trade my prized collection of Archie comics for just the chorus on this song. Driving Me Mad? You betcha(dupa). This man is a treasure. Bow low indeed.

I’ve heard whispers that Kings Of Convenience, the Norwegian duo of folkloric proportions, have split. I hope they’re unfounded, but like all good rumours, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Perhaps Erland Oye is enjoying the unlimited scope of his solo career too much? And then there’s his new submorphic guitar pop project, The Whitest Boy Alive, to keep him occupied. The whitest boy alive? Indeed he is. But damn the guy can sing.
