Copenhagen band Joe and Honey released the Heart Beast EP in January. As a follow up, they now premier the music video Fever. Filmed in a Copenhagen apartment, the video portrays a universe of sensual needs and supressed identities.

New York-artist Tom Fruin shows us how one man’s trash can become one city’s treasure. His latest creation, the Kolonihavehus, is situated in the plaza of the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen. Throwing back to the 19th century Danish tradition of Kolonihave — ‘little house with garden’ — Fruin’s sculpture is made from a thousand reclaimed pieces of plexiglass found in dumpsters around the city.

Copenhagen group, The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, will be crossing the Atlantic this March for their first US tour of the year, blasting out their unique fusion of happy soul and kaleidoscopic pop. The tour will kick off at Philadelphia’s Kung Fu Necktie, followed by stops in DC, NYC, San Diego, LA, San Francisco, and band SXSW. I’m so digging the work of Copenhagen illustrator Michael Rytz, with his spontaneous, sketchbook-like work. Characters, like vintage cartoons, parade around, fleshed out through glorious textures and scribbles punctuated with the occasional clean, bold, illustrator-like element for contrast that hits the spot.

Schmidt, Hammer and Lassen’s design for the Copenhagen national library is a celebrated structure in the already glittering design portfolio of northern Europe. The marble and glass façade of The Black Diamond (yes, that is what their national library is called) is an example of architectural brilliance, with even the angled walls designed to best mirror the city’s beautiful canals.

My little heart just about stopped when I stumbled across the intensely colorful work of Copenhagen illustration duo, Sofie Hannibal and Nan Na Hvass. I’m already a predisposed sucker for busy, vibrant work but Hannibal and Hvass’ illustrations just send me into an overexcited tizzy. There are just so many fantastic shapes and layers to soak up! I’ve yet to come across a piece on their website (and there’s a whole lot there) that doesn’t make me want to get up and dance around the room in circles.

The Danes are renowned for their considered and subtle design. However, in these times of change, they must feel they need something with this selection of a bridge building as the winner of a recent architectural competition in Denmark. The American architect Steven Holl designed this building with a pedestrian bridge that links two sides of the harbour in the distinctly low-rise Copenhagen. Full of many sustainable features, such as wind turbines that power the pedestrian bridge, the design aims to ensure that Copenhagen has a striking harbour gateway that is also a literal link. As supporters of contemporary development, this example has unfortunately left us feeling underwhelmed. There is something so awkward about the whole thing, a lacking in proportion that seems to miss the point of the qualities of that place. Then again, those qualities could belong to the ‘old’ Copenhagen.

I love Copenhagen’s Meyers Deli. I don’t know if it’s the giant plates of organic food or the super cool and warm environment. Like yogurt with apricot compote? Got that. Prefer eggs and bratwurst teamed with homemade relish? Sure. Enjoy organic marmalade with a whole freaking plate full of croissants and rolls of dark rye, brown, wholegrain, whatever rolls and slices of bread? Done. Want all that on one plate? Go to Meyers. Each room in Copenhagen’s Hotel Fox is an individual piece of art. 21 international artists descended on the hotel to turn each of the 61 rooms into a unique space, featuring creative artwork ranging from Japanese manga to fluid graphic design. ‘French-born artist WK interact has lived in New York for the last fifteen years and has decorated whole tracts of the city’s SoHo district with his dynamic and energetic imagery’, such as the black and white artwork pictured above in the Hotel Fox room themed ‘Ecstacy’.
