You can spot a Petting Zoo poster a mile off: fine forms and tasty shapes, delightful restarint and hefty usage of animals. I love the angles and how they maximise the inherent roughness that screenprinting has if you let it. They’ve made countless gig posters for all kinds of bands that really stand out from the standard fare, and from Brighton to boot. Hurrah.

Info-graphics and witty illustrations have been all the rage since IBM’s Smart Planet campaign. So it’s refreshing to see someone create some smart posters for actual positive change. Mental disorders are difficult enough to explain in words, but by using intelligent colour and shape choices, Patrick Smith makes sense of these conditions. The result are intuitive and instantly understandable minimalist posters that get to the core of these mental disorders. Guess it doesn’t work if you’re colourblind.

Some recent designs of mine include a back-lit transit poster for the 8th Annual Summer Dreams Literary Arts Festival in Vancouver, which has a look and feel similar to that of a well-designed book; a poster for Pandora’s Collective, featuring a colourful modern-retro aesthetic; and a poster for The Association of Canadian Industrial Designers (ACID), with a repeating layered maple leaf symbolizing growth of the organization.

Design study, anthropological investigation, or just urban environment observations? Posters in Amsterdam is a project that takes a collective look at the advertising allsorts that line the heresaid city’s streets.

An initiative by art director Jarr Geerligs, the project creates an interesting mosaic out of the day-to-day sight of large format print ads. For a closer look, posters can be viewed on a larger scale individually upon clicking on them. Not just about the aesthetics, the site also features interviews with some key local poster designers about the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of poster design.

Beer before liqueur, never been sicker, liqueur before beer, you’re in the clear. Ah, the fail-safe mantra of every college kid. Surprisingly enough, that timeless proverb isn’t all that preposterous according to a fab new poster by Californian creative agency Belancio.

Ok, while it doesn’t affirm the order in which you can safely chase one alcohol with another, it does lay out exactly how beer puts you in the clear from a number of health and lifestyle concerns. It’s all neatly arranged on this stylish poster from how many ounces a day increases your lifespan compared to abstainers to how it cleans your kidneys, wards off dementia and lowers your cholesterol, among other things. Bars and beer geeks the world over will be hanging these posters in triumph, saying, ‘Finally the beer belly myth has been busted!’ So forget the apple, forget the doctor, hang this poster with pride and raise a pint to health and happiness!
