Germusu are mini-storage microbial pouches, made of plush and with zipper mouths that open up to store your stuff in their bellies. Unless they throw up, of course! They’re about four inches long, so can store change, candy, keys, flash drives, and headphones. Who said it wasn’t easy being green?
I’m interested in the ways in which many textile artists these days, perhaps as a reaction to industry, focus on the process of creation rather than the utility of the resulting creations. Brooklyn-based Emily Barletta discharges emotional and physical pain through the meditative processes of crochet and embroidery. Though Barletta states that her pieces are unplanned and dictated by the properties of each new set of materials, her work consistently references biological forms — parasites, cellular structures, internal organs, amorphous and sea creatures. No wave is alive and well, if Brooklyn duo Talk Normal are any indication. Drummer Andrya Ambro keeps things cohesive with surprisingly precise percussion, occasionally banging on such things as an electric guitar and an old iron pipe rigged with contact mics, while guitarist Sarah Register coaxes some unnerving and discordant noises from her axe and array of pedals. The two take turns shouting abstract and absurdist lyrics with voices like hi-tech valkyries from a futurist nightmare.
This kind of clever visual punnery is clearly what the heel was made for. Bravo! Read more
