For the past month, a group of 29 illustrators have been collaborating with the organizers of Occupy Wall Street to create a deck of educational playing cards. The cards in 52 Shades of Greed illustrate banking practices that lead to the financial collapse, and catalogue the decision makers that were most responsible. On September 17, the one year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, the organizers plan to distribute 1000 decks in lower manhattan, and with your help it can happen!
My Fashion Playing Cards Series is a body of work focusing on fashion illustration. Using pen and ink, gouache, and micron pens, I created these women who are mysterious, dark, and possess a lot of sex appeal. Fashion is interesting to me because you can create a fantasy world that one can escape to and I began to imagine these women being part of this non-existent place that we can aspire to be a part of or just enjoy looking at.
In 2008, graphic designer Becky Edgington and illustrator Sarah Beetson created two limited-edition packs of playing cards featuring images from Beetson’s exhibition, 50 Bucks: Bring On The Sluts. The images were selected from almost 500 small artworks created on moleskine paper, inspired by vintage pornography and a trip to Japan.
