I’ve always been drawn to the idea of giving everything up and traveling as a vagabond train hopper. And Mike Brodie’s photo only feeds that fantasy. Brodie is a real-life, professional hobo and train hopper. Beginning in 2002, he traversed 50,000 miles through 46 states on more than 170 freight trains. And he brought a camera to document it all. These photos capture the anarchist spirit of the community of crust punk kids that enhabit this rare and beautiful sub-culture in America. This is the American spirit in the prime of it’s youth.

Chris Round gave up on painting when he decided that the results didn’t come fast enough. He was just a kid when he switched to the speedier art of photography. Now the Sydney-based photographer consistently produces solid work centering on the concept of human alterations in the environment. Every image seems to have humanity’s finger prints around the edges. He forces you to examine and think about his images. Human presence is implied in subtle, natural ways.

This series was taken as Amy Stein traveled across America over five years, photographing stranded motorists. They have a really great film quality to them and she captures the looks and emotion of being stuck on the roadside quite well. She even has a Google map of all the locations she stopped to photograph.

Way before that, in 1973, Katherine Anne Griffiths took her first photobooth picture at the age of 11. Since then, she’s been documenting her life through photo booth pictures. I am thrilled to have teamed up with United Photo Industries to curate Anew, a group exhibition featuring nine photographers who unearth beauty in the seemingly irrelevant, everyday objects that most people disregard, revealing that unnoticed and banal items can sometimes be quite magical. [see more photos at Feature Shoot]

By concentrating more on light, color, form and texture, rather than on the item itself, the photographers in the show render these items somewhat unrecognizable even though the object has not changed form: it’s simply been re-imagined and has taken on a new life.

From Klaus Pichler’s surprisingly beautiful photographs of dust collected around Vienna to Christopher Johanessen’s “investigation” of used frying pans that look similar to planets to George Benson’s anonymous record sleeves carefully arranged by color, these photographers recognize that something special lies within mundane items. They also have the talent to elevate, transform and breathe new life into these entities so that they can be appreciated and admired where previously they were ignored.

Anew opens at United Photo Industries in DUMBO, Brooklyn on December 6, 2012 (6 – 9pm) and runs through December 30, 2012.

Austrailian-based visual artist Catherine Nelson builds complex floating worlds consisting of hundreds of photographs stitched together. For years, Nelson has worked as a compositor in the movie industry creating visual effects for feature films such as Moulin Rouge and Harry Potter. Citybirches photography works is a beautiful photographic portrait series about alternative rock bands on tour by Stephan Laackman. He is crowdfunding the production of the book right now, which features portraits of 150 bands like Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, R.E.M, Stephen Malkmus, Wooden Shjips, Future Islands, Explosions in the Sky or Lower Dens.The book will also feature a cd compilation with musical contributions by selected portrayed bands.

Every time I’ve been hanging out with Agnes Thor and some American dude asks what her full name is, they all go ‘whoohaa, that is such a great name’. I know. It’s the name of a genius and a star. Thor’s photos are sort of like her name: first they come off as dreamy, girly and sweet, amost giving a hazy David Hamilton vibe.

But when you look closer, the nature backdrop she so often uses for her subjects starts to look less romantic and more brutal, like the last thing still uncontrollable by humans, fog, mountains, endless skies, deep forests and seas. A Mother Nature that is more powerful than any American dude could ever dream to be. Awesomeness.

The first time I ran across Sarah Morrison’s photography, I was perusing psychedelic bands on line. The photo that caught my eye was of a model in a very cool dress, flanked by members of The Electric Prunes.

I found her on Facebook and immediately began exploring her work. All of it is fantastic! People float in mid air; models become part of the scenery, and vice versa. She employs pop art, rock fashion, magic and a dash of eroticism.

Environmental artist and photographer Daniel Dancer’s new project Art of the Sky features a series of installations that can only be seen from the sky. His canvas is contrasting natural scenery, with the shapes created by up to 4,000 people (in some cases) and bucketloads of latex paint.
