This whole love thing, it can be uplifting, or it can pull us down like gravity. Ai Hasegawa‘s Extreme Environment Love Hotel reimagines the love hotel as a centrifugal mechanism with Jupiter’s gravity, which is more than double (2.34 times, to be exact) of what we’re used to on Earth.

This means, for instance, that a 50kg woman will weigh 117kg while a 70kg man will weigh 163.8kg.

‘This gravity is extreme for human beings but we may very well still be able to live and reproduce. Experiments with mice have shown that they are able to reproduce up to 2.5G… How do the effects of this new environment alter our perceptions of love and intimacy and the way couples relate emotionally in such a situation?’ she wondered out loud on her website. We wonder too.

She also has a portable version of the Extreme Environment Love Hotel too that cocoons the faces of kissing couples in a small balloon-like chamber filled with recomposed carboniferous period air (35% oxygen with swamp, fern and moss odors).

The 14-floor Kurokawa Nakagin Capsule Hotel is a 1972 building designed by Kisho Kurokawa, with a tower made from 140 pre-assembled compact capsule units, hoisted by a crane and bolted to the concrete core shaft. They come fitted with appliances and furniture for solitary dwellers, and when additional units are connected, can also host families. Built to be easily adaptable, it’s a pretty forward-thinking design for a building. Plus, it also looks like a stack of washing machines tossed out in the streets, which is also kind of cool.
