Imagine the earth abandoned by humans, blanketed in rubbish and white ashes, where insects are the only living species left. This is what my dreams are made of, unnerving visions of how we use and abuse nature in a way that is detrimental to humanity. My Creatures and Conflict conceptual art and furniture expresses this in a dramatic way, nature entangled and conflicted and fighting for survival, a kind of dream-like poetry in motion.

Michael Perry from Walk the Plank has returned home with a fresh container load of furniture that will form the centerpiece of an exclusive show at Sydney’s China Heights Gallery. New ‘green’ designers and true artisans create using discarded materials with that in mind, paying attention to details and putting extra care into quality standards. ‘Shabby chic’ is not an option, almost a cop-out, really. Stil Novo Design doesn’t care for the ‘shabby’ part at all, and it shows.

Artist/designer Kevin bird used a 3D printer to print out a femur to replace the missing leg of a broken table for Fixed, a recent, one-night exhibition put on by The Southern Design Conern that featured repaired objects.

For almost a decade, the flamboyant designer’s psychedelic work has redefined the purpose of cowhide application to interior design. Tasteful floor rugs, furniture panels and wall coverings are meticulously prettied up with vibrant hide colours, mosaic textures and wood finishes for that ultra-modern air of festive fun. Peter J Pless’ Tryst stool, which seats two people face to face, reminds me of that old Saturday Night Live skit with the love toilet.
