At one time, this documentary was getting a lot of buzz. It’s both a fascinating milieu and flawlessly executed. I have an obsession with obscure hobbies that create huge subcultures where the fans would give anything to be Jim Richman for a day, a person who most of us would never hear of if it weren’t for beautiful little films like this My favorite line in the whole movie is: ‘Lance Armstrong is the Jim Richman of the bicycle world’. It sums up the whole film for me.

Ben Young, the man behind Greenwood Yard, has been busy. He is one of the most creative people we have ever had the privilege to share a pitcher of PBR with. He’s recently been releasing video content like wildfire through his site and this particular piece stuck pretty heavy.

Shooting Donald is a short documentary following Ben’s brother, who was a Canadian basketball star until a bad situation placed him in a very scary, serious world of drugs and gang violence. His turnaround to find the happiness and the security of his old life is moving and at sometimes heart-wrenching. A great documentary.

I’ve watched this documentary several times and never get tired of it. It came out last year, but if you have not had the pleasure to experience it, go ahead and look for it. Not only are the origami sculpture pieces shown jaw dropping, but I am mesmerized with Erik Demaine’s theory in which the folding of origami can be compared to the folding of proteins and could be used in the future to cure diseases.

Some gents I know are finishing up a documentary on one of my personal inspirations, writer/editor, George Plimpton. The godfather of participatory journalism, he pitched against Willie Mays, tended goal for the Bruins, and ran the floor with Bill Russell and the Celtics, all while editing the Paris Review and maintaining his status as NYC’s Fireworks commissioner. The site I run, Take the Handle, is actually throwing a party in August for it. Should be a hoot.

I went to see the documentary Project Nim other day at The Music Box in Chicago. It’s the kind of place that is also playing the director’s cut of The Man Who Fell To Earth on a giant screen. Most movies about talking animals are the dumbest of the dumb. This documentary, about a chimp that was taught to communicate in ASL, is one of the best documentaries I’ve seen.

Nim’s story is told through the perspective of the dozen or so people (in many cases, deeply flawed people) who took care of him over the span of his life. It’s impossible to watch this and not think how chimps communicate and feel much the way that we do.

Ruthless, charming, brilliant, and way ahead of his time, the late Bill Hicks was an American comic who tragically passed away from pancreatic cancer at the youthful age of 32 in 1994. His rants and scathing views on American consumerism, superficiality, mediocrity and banality within the media and popular culture have only grown stronger over the years and inspired comics all over the world.

American: The Bill Hicks Story is a new documentary available now on Netflix, which details the life of Hicks via his family, childhood friends and fellow comedians from his early stand up days in Houston, TX. If you haven’t already- go find out about Bill Hicks. You’ll be glad you did.

One of my favourite film-makers working today delivers the goods in his new documentary, The Cave Of Forgotten Dreams. Werner Herzog explores some of the oldest cave paintings ever found. And it’s in 3D and all told in a way only Herzog knows how: albino crocodiles and all.

I just saw the documentary on Bill Cunningham, a big influence of mine. His complete devotion to his craft at the cost of an entire life is astounding, moving, and sweet. Such a monkish soul in the midst of the most fickle industry around. It’s amazing to see someone who works at photographing every hour of every day and how comfortable they get with their camera and the act of capturing their surroundings. Exquisite!
