I’ve been reading Jesse Moynihan’s comics online for a long time and I’m a big fan. He recently had his comic Forming collected and published by Nobrow Press. Finally being able to hold his work and seeing it all there in front of you makes you realise how make of a task he’s taken on in developing a unique story about how the Earth and its people were formed.

I’ve admired the work of Clyde Peterson: be it as a musician, filmmaker, animator, or writer of brilliant comics, for many years now. Here’s one recent, awesome as always example. Perhaps it will make an admirer out of you, too.

Yuichi Yokoyama is a Japanese comic artist published by Picturebox in Brooklyn. I fell in love with his book, Travel, last year, and saw he had a new one out when I was at Free Comic Book Day.

This comic, Garden, encapsulates the idea of adventure to me. It follows a mass of nameless people as they wander around a magnificent, mysterious garden. The place is revealed to be a sort of theme park filled with hybrid natural and man-made oddities. It’s super immersive, so I recommend reading this from start to finish in one sitting. Lot of surprisingly subtle humor in there, too.

David Mack is one of those rare comic book creators who has mastered both writing and art. Mack’s art isn’t what you will typically find in a comic book. He uses a mix of collage, pencil, ink and varied mediums to form his intricate and unique fine art style. His latest graphic novel, Kabuki the Alchemy, may be his best work yet.

I re-read both the Hernanadez brothers collected works about once a year and there’s not a lot between them. But somehow the subject matter and sheer storytelling verve of Locas tips the balance for me. I’m constantly in awe of how they both can chronicle the lives of huge casts of characters. The hardback collections of Locas and Palomar are absolutely essential.

If I were an unassuming, mild-mannered girl working in a hip publishing company, I might print some of these daily Crimes Against Hugh’s Manatees comics out and tape them up in my cubicle. Since I’m not, I’ll have to put them up in my special hidden place where the monkeys are.

Illustrator Jashar Awan now has a new website devoted solely to his butt kicking superhero comics and moody graphic novels. This is the kind of stuff that will appeal immensely to the childhood superhero fanatic in all of us.
