Marketed as beer for punks, Scotland-based BrewDog has been conjuring up innovative new hardcore beers since early 2007. And now, you can down their hardcore brews with company at their recently opened series of bars throughout Scotland (of course) launched as a ‘focal point for the craft beer proletariat’.

Just like the brewery itself, the bars boast an edgy, punk rock feel. Or as the Scottish agency behind the interior, CM Design, puts it, the concept is ‘Cold War chic meets abandoned factory’. Fittingly, inspiration came from old warehouses throughout Eastern Europe and furniture, fixtures, and fittings were plucked from yards, auctions, antique boutiques, and even eBay. From northeast Scotland to around the world — in a bottle or at the bar — it seems BrewDog really is the beer with a bite.

Just Beer, a microbrewery in Wesport, MA has just given you another good reason to pick up a case of beer. Thanks to a zany collaboration between the brewer and an author, your ordinary, after-work brewski has been turned into a 12-part detective series printed right onto your bottle.

Known as the Case of the IPA, each 22oz bottle in a 12-case of Just Beer IPA reveals another chapter in a 1920’s-inspired detective melodrama about a wealthy brewer and his intrigues. Full of brewing references and industry puns, this story is likely to quench your thirst and your curiosity. Sorry kids, you’re gonna have to show some ID to check out this book and remember to ‘read responsibly’.
It’s one thing to sell beer in preserved animal carcasses, but how about selling beer to preserve animals? Well, that’s exactly what Australian Nail Brewing Company is doing with their new limited edition Antarctic Nail Ale. This brewery has teamed up with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as they campaign to prevent the illegal hunting of whales in the Antarctic sanctuary.

While out on just such a campaign, the Sea Shepherds had a secondary mission – to harvest ice from pure Antarctic icebergs to be transformed into the world’s first ever Antarctic Pale Ale. Nail Brewing Co. brewed thirty bottles of this rare brew and they are now being auctioned off with all proceeds going to the Sea Shepherds. The first bottle was recently sold for $800. Move over BrewDog, this is the new most expensive beer in the world – and likely the purest.

What do you get when two of Europe’s most rock ‘n roll brewers — Denmark’s Mikkeller and Scotland’s BrewDog — come together in a blended beer fantasy? The answer is a brilliant, hoppy-filled creation lovingly titled, I Hardcore You. A 9.5% Imperial India Pale Ale, I Hardcore You is a ‘hop bomb’. To make it, the already hoppy I Beat yoU from Mikkeller was fused together with BrewDog’s Hardcore IPA, then dry hopped twice and then again, and maybe once or twice more.

In any case the result is an amber, hop-loving brew that is gaining accolades from Scotland to Denmark and beyond. So too is the packaging. Illustrated by New Jersey-based Keith Shore and creative agency Union, the labels tell the tale of an amorous coming together, not unlike that of Mikkeller and BrewDog.

The alliance couldn’t make more sense. Mikkeller is the brand of two young one-time homebrewers who took their hobby international. Today, the creative brewery is named one of the best not only in Denmark but also in the world. BrewDog’s have a similar story to tell. The mastermind of two twenty-something Scots, this independent brewery is dedicated to turning outcontemporary, cool beers with an innovative twist. I Hardcore You certainly falls neatly under this category. But, be warned — this one-off brew is available only in limited quantities. I Hardcore You, indeed.

Peanut butter and jelly. Ben and Jerry. Beer and music. In the case of some partnerships, the whole is certainly greater than the sum of its parts. And thanks to the Philadelphia-based makers of Tuned Pale Ale, partaking in the time-honored combination of tunes and booze is about to get easier.

Their brew comes packaged to encourage musical experimentation, with markers indicating the notes produced by blowing over the neck of the bottle at various liquid levels, plus a notched side intended to be strummed with the cap. And since no ensemble is complete without a bit of percussion, the upside down holder works as a tongue drum. Now would be a good time to start thinking about the name of your band.

Three German-style beers cleverly embody some of the Grimm Brothers’ famous tales in both flavor and hue, coupled with enchanting labels by The Tenfold Collective.

Check out the Snow White-inspired Snow Drop that suggests purity and sweetness, or the darksome Fearless Youth made with toasted malt. There’s also the copper-colored Little Red Cap that promises to surprise. Best of all, with these bottles you get a universal user-friendly guide on what to expect inside, without needing to be an expert decoder of German-style beer-speak. Now that’s a happily ever after.

Back in April, we told the tale behind the creation of NELSON beer — a collaborative, user-feedback Australian brew. Now, in preparation for Melbourne’s Spring Fashion Week in early September, this same Beta beer has slipped into its most recent attire, designed by Melbourne-based fashion house, Trimäpee.

Together, NELSON and Trimäpee designers Peter Strateas and Mario-Luca Carlucci collaborated to turn the humble bottle into a means of expression, in line with Trimäpee’s eclectic brand and philosophy. The resulting design emphasizes textures, patterns, cuts, and fits, resembling a coat of arms with buttons, chords, and zippers. The limited edition project is the third in a series of collaborative NELSON labels.
