One listen to InnerSpeaker and you’d think the superbly talented John Lennon has somehow resurrected from the grave. The reality is, Tame Impala vocalist/guitarist Kevin Parker shares an eerie vocal resemblance with the Beatle and I can’t stop spinning this album in every personal hi-fi I own. Everything from the boldly nostalgic artwork to the meandering collection of timeless psychedelic sound moments and dreamy harmonies strengthens my faith in Aussie music.

Some bands never get the respect nor the notoriety they deserve. Last year, The Supporters released a full-length album and, very quietly, it collected a swag of rave reviews. Then whenever they played gigs, they blew away whoever had the good sense to show up. Today they still play criminally small venues, and they are still totally under-appreciated. If fast, uncompromising Aussie rock is your thing, The Supporters are your band. It doesn’t come any grittier and satisfying than this.
Kevin Van Aeist’s ‘small interventions’ are beautifully simple and whimsical manipulations and alterations of everyday objects. Read more
The cool thing about Robin Eley’s photo-realistic paintings is that they’re very much more about the process of painting — the angles, the composition, the lighting, the backgrounds, and the poses — than about photography. Read more
I don’t get Flight of The Concords. I just don’t find it funny. I also don’t get most comedy these days. It’s so derivative and clichéd. Everyone wants the same laughs. I like comedy that pushes the boundaries in strange ways. Fonejack is one underground unit that have had me rolling around on the floor with their real life skits. Read more
Cement isn’t usually thought of as a light and airy material, but A4estudio’s Sobrino House in Mendoza, Argentina may change that with it’s relaxed, open, and earthy feel. Read more
I’ve been a big fan of Michelle Vandermeer’s work since I came across her Mini Majellen zines at this year’s Sydney Writers Festival. Describing herself as a doer — as in one of those people who are always doing or making something — Michelle’s work, which includes book binding, illustration, jewelery making and her zines, stems from an internal creative springboard and a double degree in architecture and graphic design. I usually steer clear of anything smelling of disco-breaks: the thought just bores me. But with Padded Cell’s new release, Night Must Fall, I see a bit of a U-turn on the horizon. There’s something really interesting going on here: it’s a cocktail of 80′s swank laced with woozy narcotic undertones and flecked with snappy drum loops: weird, undeniably dark and ominous, but nonetheless pretty damn satisfying. Tarot cards, folk music, Charles Manson, ballet, freaks and geeks, and Patty Hearst can all take responsibility for being some of the inspiration’s behind the Australian fashion label, Lover. It’s all too clever and witty to ignore. Each collection adheres to a specific narrative and a central character. Read more
