When the Miami Design District asked Common Machine to provide video services again this year during the weeklong festiganza of Art Basel week, we suggested that instead of the usual hose-everything-down and make a few videos set to music (that wouldn’t do much more than play on repeat in their tastefully minimalist conference room) we make a series of short, documentary films profiling artists, designers and curators and create a microsite for the films that was, well, tastefully minimalist. Brooklyn-band Hypernova’s new music video was shot and directed by Common Machine’s Director of Photography, Richard Patterson, on Profoto’s spanking new, lighting packs, enabling the video to be shot on a stills camera. There are actually more than 16,000 stills that make up the video, the first time it’s ever been done like this.

Common Machine is a hot new media collective of artists, editors, filmmakers, photographers and producers. Based in Miami, with key collaborators in New York, the studio is headed by Brett O’Bourke, an award-winning journalist turned documentary producer who has since focused on producing web-based niche entertainment for corporate clients. Several Common Machine projects will be hitting the internets in the coming months, including a series of videos for a classic clothing retailer looking to rebrand, videos for several big name architects, to be released just before Art Basel Miami Beach, and the second installment of the video series it is producing for Lost At E Minor, the first of which — a profile on marionette maker, Pablo Cano — is above.

Our friends over at SNAP!, Montreal’s only free and independent arts and lifestyle magazine have just released their fourth issue in which they look back and celebrate the faded beauty of past eras, grandmas and grandpas, Polaroids, antique finds, old wisdom and vintage style. Yeeha! They also remember the best of 2008 in Montreal arts, with a variety of writers and photographers giving their take on their favourite cultural discoveries.
These very sweet folks from Seattle supported Broken Social Scene on our last American dates of the Spirit IF tour. Although they haven’t quite hit their stride as a live outfit, the tunes from songwriter Grant Olsen have some very lovely moments that fall somewhere between Velvet Underground and The Everly Brothers. I think Arthur and Yu could take over from where Grandaddy left off, though with better songs. No offense to Grandaddy.
The eagerly anticipated collaboration between Spanish footwear label Camper and Bernhard Willhelm debuted on the catwalk for the designer’s Spring 09 collection. Camper Together fuses the references and inspirations from Willhelm latest collection with Campers’ quality production techniques. Most popular is sure to be Willhelms’ take on the gladiator, with sandals constructed of ribbons and piping.

Now this is fun. This 3D watch dial actually jumps to life. The dial is a modern version of the 19th century art form of lithophanes: carved porcelain sheets that, when lit, deliver astoundingly detailed images. When the pusher is activated, the dial springs to life in 3D, with an LED light and afterglow effect. Read more
