I’ve heard that Belgian artist Brecht Evens likes to party. I wonder how he finds enough time to do so given how labour-intensive his graphic novels appear. A lot of comic artists play with black and white, maybe a wash of grey or digital flat colours in firm boxes, while Brecht deploys watercolours, watercolours, and watercolours for hundreds of incredibly flexible frames. I can’t even start to imagine how he manages his pages.

Now, after 30 years, German publishing giant Taschen has selected 1344 of Crumb’s best drawings and original sketches to realise a bound seven-volume limited edition set. Priced at an eye-watering $A930, the edition also includes the past 20 years of Robert Crumb’s life with over 600 rare and unpublished drawings. Even if you have the readies, be quick: there are only 1,000 copies available.

Marvel’s X-Universe can get pretty ridiculous at times. But at its best, things like the first years of The New Mutants happen. With unbelievable artwork by Bill Sienkiewicz, who has to be the most underrated comic book artist out there, it really doesn’t matter where the stories go. His vision of that alternate world of mutants and humans really takes things to another level. Possibly a more believable level, even though his style is so much more surreal than most artists.

Daniel Clowes is a comic book artist with a great eye for detail and a fantastic storyteller. There are very few artists out there whose work can be as faithful to the human condition as Clowes’ is. A great measure of raw emotion can be found in a single colour screen print made by this classy gent, which is something you can’t find often these days.

His commentary on suburban life and the Art Scene are very critical and often comedic, which I can relate to a great deal. I strongly suggest that any aspiring artists, who feel that art school will help them advance in some way, read Art School Confidential and Ghost World. I found some hilarious parallels between both his and my own experience with art school. His brand of sarcasm is my kind of sarcasm.
