Over the past twenty years, Woody Allen has churned out mediocre efforts, especially compared to his early work. Vicky Cristina Barcelona, though, is a standout riddled with social satire and excellent comic timing. It follows Vicky and Cristina, two young American friends who share similar interests but opposite morals. They spend the summer in Barcelona, and the cast, including an in-form Penelope Cruz, Javier Bordem and Scarlett Johansson, all revel in a script that boasts some of Allen’s best lines. For years Allen doggedly stuck to his beloved New York, a city he shot with care and consideration, and that same touch has been brought to Barcelona. He takes us to the villas, islands and other standout tourist locations, the setting for each scene a different postcard. Most the major landmarks are represented, along with picturesque villas, restaurants and streets, although none of it is overdone and provides the ideal background to this meditation on love that is insightful, but still manages to keep the light, playful tone of a holiday romance.

Scott Prendergast wrote, directed, and starred in the movie Kabluey, which he referred to as a ‘melancomedy’ about Salman, an awkward but well-intentioned man, and his sister-in-law, Leslie (played by Lisa Kudrow), who are thrown together amidst an array of personal difficulties. While Leslie’s husband is away at war, Salman steps in to serve as a live-in nanny to his two young nephews, who are struggling with anger issues of their own.
James Blagden is one of the most unique and original young illustrators out there. He is going to be big, big, BIG. And I’m so proud as I used to be his teacher! His website just got a makeover for 2009, so we checked in with him and asked him what else he’d been working on lately: ‘I’ve done some commercial work for Nike and Uniqlo and a recent editorial drawing for a Swiss magazine called Annabelle. I’ve got a couple of personal projects going as well. Hopefully I’ll stay focused long enough to finish them’. Read more
I’ve seen all sorts of tattoos on the streets of Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, but this is a first. Hello Kitty meets Darth Vader and, err, Style Wars will never be the same again.
Oh boy, this is fun. Omaha’s Tilly and the Wall are kitsch-cool-camp-vauderville meets pop-folk-flamenco, with a tap dancer for a drummer and some serious, serious charisma for a calling card.
I came across the Dongzhong cave school, which is situated in a Miao village within the Ziyun county, while watching a fascinating BBC documentary series about China the other night. The school, which was built in 1984 and caters for just under 200 students, is considered to be ‘a teaching branch for nearby resident units’. It looks stunning in its ornate beauty, and it must be one hell of a stimulating environment in which to learn. Read more
Max-O-Matic, aka Máximo Tuja, is one of my favorite illustrators. He was born in Buenos Aires and had his first solo show in Barcelona in 2008. He makes beautiful, wierd and detailed collages, which are just so much fun to look at. Read more
There’s some nice, doom-tinged psych rock coming out of Holtzclaw, Virginia in the form of Pontiak, a lumbering, feverish, blues-heavy trio that sounds like a hungover morning after a drunken party around a bonfire in the woods.

Ring out the bad, and ring in the good, Yessir, these Happy Day and Crappy Day rings are just that: a jolt of brutal realism cloaked in saccharine sweet colourings.
