A few years ago, I discovered Ricardo Cavolo’s work by chance and I bought two of his prints. Now I’m so happy to see his great success as an illustrator and artist. And no wonder. His art is absolutely brilliant.

In the past, my conceptual portrait illustrations have been mostly inspired by music. But I’ve always been drawn to the things that most people turn away from, and I enjoy illustrating these subjects in a style that is both beautiful and occasionally disturbing. I have just begun a new series called Phobophilia, in which I take common fears and fetishize them. My work is often slightly erotic, and with this project, I plan to turn fear into something a bit more appealing.

Tokyo-based illustrator Fmio Watanabe has managed to create beautiful storybook-like landscapes that look so perfect I’d swear they were digital. But they aren’t; they’re hand painted. These works of art are all done using ridiculously tiny paintbrushes, gouache, and acrylic paint.

The colours are what really get me. His combination of neon and pastel is so perfect that I’d give anything to be in one of his paintings. Maybe if I stare at them long enough, the gloomy weather that surrounds my place will turn into chartreuse, magenta, and baby blue.
