I’m simultaneously left intrigued and blissed-out whenever I listen to the melodic hooks and bitter sweet vocals created by The Lighthouse and The Whaler. This unsigned Cleveland threesome blends classic modern pop with interesting orchestral soundscapes that take you on an imaginary nautical journey beyond the sea. They’re an upcoming band to keep on your radar, having just played a spot at 2010’s eminent South by South West festival and released their self-titled debut album on iTunes.

The work of Cleveland-based artist Arabella Proffer revolves around a ‘fascination with punk rock, aristocrats, Renaissance fashions, pre-code cinema and rock ‘n’roll groupies’. She makes up bad behaving punk aristocrats in her head and writes small bios for them, as well as family trees and maps of fake countries they live in. Read more

Rui Ribeiro is an illustrator with a graphics background, so his technical skill and attention to design can be seen in his work. His works have messages reflecting today’s society, as well as human details, like hair, to infuse his style with highly detailed finishing.

Bullies get a bad wrap: truth is, they keep the rest of us on our toes and that ain’t a bad thing (just ask Natalie Portman). Which is why this series of ads by College Humor is way more appealing that the dull, sanitised rubbish more agencies throw in our faces. Read more

After weeks of packing Australia’s crate with the best of Aussie nightlife, our crate was farewelled in lavish style at the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange send-off party in Sydney last week. We discovered Australia is swapping with Brazil, so we’re hanging out for the samba and cachaça to sway ashore and lead us astray. Lost At E Minor contributor Michelle Wilding captured the vibe of the night and Aussie nightlife with this video.

Melbournes laneways are cluttered with themed, designer bars. The challenge seems to be which is the most hip, funky and individual bar. Step in Section 8, an old inner city carpark furbished with warehouse pallets, patio heaters and a couple of freight containers, converted to serve you drinks. The vibe is fittingly low-key, with background music played at a reasonable level, frequently changing decor, and a variety of options to quench your thirst. It’s casual, fun and simple. Oh, and to keep it that way, there’s even a no suit policy! [photo via TravelMuse]

UK music journalist Everett True comes from the Nick Kent school of writing: live the life and hope to come out the other end with one hell of a story. And he has. In this case, the story of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. In this exclusive piece, he talks about his association with Seattle’s finest and his friendship with the perennially troublesome Courtney Love. UK-based one-man-band Sieben has a new album out: As They Should Sound. Frontman Matt Howden builds songs with a loop pedal and a violin, which he uses for rhythm and melody. His sound is wonderfully sophisticated and cabalistic, with a particularly British sense of lyricism.
