Officially, Avec is first and foremost a wine bar. Yet, a few minutes in this vibrant, energetic Chicago-based space and it’s quickly evident that it’s so much more. Set in a long, narrow honey-colored room wrapped in cedar and hickory, with five communal tables and red oak seating, the atmosphere is loud and boisterous, filled with lively conversation and music to match. Within this James Beard Award Winning designed room, rustic cuisine, charcuterie, and cheese from the Mediterranean regions of Southern France, Portugal, Italy, and Spain are served as small and large plates. Some of Amanda Wachob’s tattoos are more traditional than others, but they’re all rooted in high art, with some of her work mimicking paint strokes to create abstract pieces that very much play on the notion of the human body being a canvas.

Loyal Loot Collective makes this stunning collection of bowls made out of logs. A variety of fallen and discarded trees are locally collected, repurposed into bowls, and then finished in a beautiful range of colors. Read more

I’m enjoying the writing on the recently launched The Epi-Cure blog, which discusses the ‘latest scientific studies on health and nutrition’, and features interviews with ‘expert scientists, dieticians, and nutritionists’. The site’s founder and editor, Michelle Grey, also runs tasty, healthy recipes from New York chef Benjamin Towill, including today’s installment: Stuffed Zucchini Flowers [above]. Hmmm hmm.
