Late last year, I spent a month volunteering at Northern Thailand’s Elephant Nature Park, located 45 minutes from Chiang Mai, in a lush valley by the Mae Taeng River. This was truly one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Every day was spent working on projects like building fences and huts and collecting food for the 35 elephants who call the Park home. Musicians in Jacksonville, Florida, often plop themselves amongst breakfasting families to nurse their hangovers at the Fox Restaurant. The food is a step above normal greasy spoon fare, but is just as cheap, with a full breakfast costing as little as three dollars. They even offer bananas as an alternative to grits or hash browns.
Is the soul colored or is it black and white? I find this quite confusing, since I believe that a colored soul is necessary for producing colored things. But then again, I’m sure that true color often comes from the deepest broken, damaged and divided black of one’s soul. Digital Jacklight is a mission to try and find out.
Every now and then you encounter a band whose sound cannot be confined to CD, Vinyl or a MySpace Music Player; a sound so incredible that it must be experienced first hand, in the flesh, where it can do some well-deserved damage to your eardrums. Yellow Bird Project, a Montreal-based organization, has teamed up with indie rock bands to raise money for charities. The rock bands, including big indie rockers like The National and The Shins, design their own tee-shirt and choose the charities that will benefit from the sales. In 2008, graphic designer Becky Edgington and illustrator Sarah Beetson created two limited-edition packs of playing cards featuring images from Beetson’s exhibition, 50 Bucks: Bring On The Sluts.
