Hand-crafted ceramic artist Kathryn Mitchell is set to launch her exhibition, Ebb Tide, on March 2 at Clay Art Benowa on Australia’s Gold Coast. Ebb Tide will see Mitchell collaborate with fellow Gold Coast ceramicist Megan Puls in a show that explores the connections, journeys and movements of water. And Mitchell knows a lot about water. Growing up on a small British Island, crisscrossed with river systems and surrounded by ocean, the show also draws influence from Florence and the Machine lyrics, Frida Kahlo paintings, and the ideologies of interpersonal relationships. If you want to check it out, you better make a date in your diary as the show only runs until March 10.

Ceramicist Tamsin Van Essen has designed a collection of vases inspired by the opulence of 17th century Dutch Vanitas paintings. The collection explores the beauty and the vulnerability of excess and aims to capture the fragile moment when abundance turns to decay. An exuberance of decoration disrupts the vases’ delicate forms, implying deterioration and ruin. Frozen in time just as disintegration begins, the vases hint towards the impermanence of material existence and the inevitable decline of beauty.
