Let’s face it, who doesn’t want to zip around town in a spankin’ new Mercedes? Well, ok, ok, this is not quite the epic car that saturated my childhood dreams, but it’s eco friendly and fuel efficient and available for around US$12,000. Apparently it comes with an ‘exoskeleton’, for better safety, and a 55 MPG engine. And there’s even a topless model for those convertible lovers. Smart? Yeah, kinda.

Ok, well, we all need to have dreams, and if yours haven’t been that exciting lately, here’s one to wrap your mind around. The Aston Martin One-77 is no mere car, but ‘possibly the world’s most desirable automotive art form’. You want proof? Just look at it! Marek Reichmann and his design team have sculpted the One-77 so that it is still instantly recognisably an Aston Martin, but with hints of a new design language. Aston’s silver door handles and familiar rear lights feature, while the rear haunches are voluptuous and the six-spoke wheels hide huge ceramic brakes. Aston Martin CEO Ulrich Bez has confirmed that power will come from an artfully-crafted derivative of the company’s existing 6-liter V12, bored and stroked to 7 liters and producing somewhere in the neighborhood of 700 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque. Now, that’s some serious grunt. Read more

The Puyo is an environmentally friendly concept car designed by Honda. The vehicle is ultra-efficient, powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology, and has a unique aesthetic to boot. Literally. The sensual nature of this hydrogen fuel cell car also comes with a sense of transparency from its panoramic windows and intuitive operation. One of the coolest features of the Honda Puyo, however, is that the cabin rotates 360-degrees, so the car doesn’t have to go in reverse.

Norwegian designer Oskar Johansen’s entry into the 2008 Peugot Design Contest is every little boy’s dream come true, a sleek hyper-futuristic vehicle that folds in on itself for easy parking, and is powered via lithium batteries that can be recharged via built-in solar cells. All that’s missing is a laser canon.
London-based indie-prog group Klaxons take their name from the Greek word ‘to shriek’. We interviewed vocalist and keyboardist, Jamie Righton, and asked him why, unlike many of their contemporaries, none of them grew up to become great footballers: ‘Me and Simon are from Stratford-upon-Avon and the only famous footballer to ever come from there is Gary Barnett! Jamie’s from Bournemouth and there are even less from there. I was asked to play for the Tottenham Hotspur Legends and Celebrities team in a new Sky TV programme but it clashes with our US tour. Says Van She bassist and vocalist Matt Van Schie about the Bush Tetras track — Too Many Creeps — from 1982: ‘I LOOOVE this tune. It opens with a perfect snare roll, and then the counter bass and guitar rhythms make it so cool. The lyrics are even more valid today. They’re one of my favourite bands of all time, and so many people try to do what they did for real. What a time! I wish I was born back then in New York, hanging out with these kids. Ahhhh!!’

Pre-eminent Norwegian Viking metal band Enslaved has evolved over the years from a straight-forward black metal band into a moody, post-rock outfit without completely abandoning their roots. Their last few albums have seen a shift towards English lyrics, sweeping and majestic instrumentals, and diverse influences — everything from Pink Floyd and ’70s prog and psych rock to ’80s goth and shoegaze pop.
