Working out of his Sacramento studio, DECABET, artist Jason Malmberg creates killer poster designs. I love the lines, color and typography. Now I just need a band to have him do the poster artwork for.

Sofia Lacin and Hennessy Christophel recently completed Same Sun, the hand-painted, abstract mural and kinetic shadow installation on a five-story, 14,000-sf water tank in California. One third of the five month project was hand-held brushwork, done solely by the two artists. The artwork has a unique kinetic element whereby the installation interacts with the sun through shadows that move across the tank and complete the phrase, The Sun Shines Upon Us All, creating an interesting connection between time and place.

Do you remember the first time you went to the beach? This is three year-old Nicole’s first time ever playing at the beach. I don’t remember my first time in the sand or water, but I can only hope that I had this much fun! On a technical note, this was shot entirely on the GoPro camera.

I absolutely adore Sauce on Hampton in Venice Beach, California. The cultured, little café, buried just off Rose Ave, may only serve up fifteen dishes, but they are all equally divine. The quinoa salad, omelets and the freshly baked macadamia cookie, which comes free with the cheque, tick all the boxes on my list.

Beginning with only a few ribbons of fabric, these outfits were sewn by Bosnian designer Naida Begeta, as she was unable to find anything that suited her personal style.

The San Francisco Wheatpaste Project wants to encourage Californian residents to vote Yes on Prop 19 this Tuesday. So to twist their arms just a little further, they’ve created this fun video which documents the street art poster-ing process from the beginning to its not so bitter end. The song is Deceptacon by Le Tigre.

At The Farmacy in Los Angeles, California the ubiquitous food/marijuana relationship is taken to a whole new level. Here, at this medical-marijuana-dispensary-cum-organic-health-store, handmade, herbally-enhanced butter, pretzels, lemonade, olive oil, and more line the shelves. There’s even the occasional cannabis cooking class so you can learn how to make your own pot biscotti, in case you weren’t feeling quite new-agey enough. So step aside munchies, cannabis gelato is here.

Californian artist Saelee Oh believes everything in the universe is connected, so it’s only natural that this conviction would be the central theme to her current solo-exhibit Infinite Roots. Her stunning work often depicts a harmonious world full of energy. Whimsical narratives are told by horses, octopus and also through female figures. Infinite Roots features multi-medium pieces including paintings, drawings and hand-cut paper. The intricate detail involved with her floral creations astounds me. Catch the exhibit at New York’s Jonathan LeVine Gallery until February 13.

I was immediately taken with the work of California artist Zack Paul. Especially the images created on various bits of driftwood and found natural objects. The most perfect backdrop to his clean, geometric images.

The owner of the Bone Room had worked in a store that sold reptiles, cobras, and spiders since 1987. Now he’s running his own business where he sells bones of all kinds: from human skulls written with the corresponding natural record to different kinds of animal bones, skulls and even embalmed laboratory rats and dissected insects.

California-based drums-bass-piano trio Topaz Rags may or may not have tumbled out of a desert roadhouse, but their sound evokes the kind of gleefully sinister goings-on you might imagine beneath thrumming bug zappers and a flickering neon glow after the bartender has locked the front door and Bubba has donned his purple cloak.

Crusty black metal duo Bone Awl crawled out of their hole in Novato, California to do a nation-wide tour recently and I missed them because I’m a dingleberry. As if that wasn’t bad enough, they had Klaxon label-mates Volahn and Ashdautas in tow, ensuring pure auditory armageddon at every show. I think I need a metal secretary to keep me abreast of these things.

I love the bold watercolors of California artist Erin Althea, with their esoteric imagery and experimentation. Yup, I’m just a sucker for the folksy stuff.

Wired just published a great article asserting that despite all the uproar over China’s consumption of fossil fuels, the rapidly developing nation still uses less gas than California alone.

A reminder about the Caleb Neelon Is Working on It solo exhibition of artist, writer and educator, Caleb Neelon, which kicks off at West Hollywood’s Carmichael Gallery on May 10th and runs until June 1st. The show will reveal the New England native’s new visual theme — ‘leaves’ — which Nelson sees as being a ‘symbol of strength and hope’.

The work of Californian artist Joe Koller channels his two major influences: surfing and the arts. His inspiration from the ocean is a constant undercurrent in his photographs of nature, urban landscapes, and travel shots. After a few group shows in Southern and Northern California over the past two years, he’ll be launching his first solo show — Adrfit — at San Francisco’s Space Gallery on April 27th.

Mararian’s Inky Dreadfuls exhibition of new works — Phobias, Foibles and Fiends — which is opening in July at Culver City, California’s Corey Helford Gallery: ‘The exhibition features an installation of over thirty macabre ink renderings which reflect a humorous, yet intensely personal examination of lost innocence in our modern society, dealing with psychological fears, character flaws, and complexes of the human id. Mararian magnifies the three different traits his subjects embody, “phobias, foibles, and fiends”. Each work is hand drawn in various ink forms, crudely brushed and scratched at times for a gritty, textured aesthetic, juxtaposing the virtuous image of a little child with a boldly exposed inner cruelty, Mararian creates humorous vignettes, fictitious moments of life captured in time’.
