Even though many don’t expect Buenos Aires, or Latin America in general, to be a hotspot for awesome street art, it is. Check out this new mural which bloomed through a collaboration between Belgian artist ROA and the Argentine artist, Ever, in the ever-hip neighbourhood of Palermo. The work, called The People Feed Communism to the Beast, is a beautiful example of two talented street artists working together to create something stunning.

The objective of German artist Franz Ackermann was to travel to Buenos Aires, stay there for two months, creating one of his mental maps by taking photos of the highlights of this city and than converting these into a mural which will be exhibited at the Faena Arts Center, as well in Buenos Aires. By visiting the 2800 square foot room, you´ll see and experience the biggest mural in his career, which consists of 25 panels of wood painted in vibrant colours.

The ‘seven deadly sins’ is a classical topic for an artist, it seems. As a fan of the Renaissance, I tend to prefer the traditional interpretation. However, Christian Montenegro, an illustrator from Buenos Aires, has come up with an interesting modernist version.

He mixes graphic design elements with comics. The result is a very colorful interpretation of the biblical motif that I find quite stunning. Montenegro’s works have been exhibited in Argentina and beyond.

Buenos Aires is having its culinary coming of age and innovative trends in eating abound in this thriving, South American urban hotspot. One of the hottest fads around is the guerilla dining movement, where underground eateries and off-the-beaten-path spots are flourishing in chef’s homes throughout the city. Head into Buenos Aires’ Barrio Norte neighborhood and — possibly without knowing it at first — you’ll find Casa Mun.

Like many closed-door spots here, Casa Mun is the work of one foodie expat sharing his own cultural background and unique culinary skills with lucky porteños. Chef Mun — the man and namesake behind Casa Mun — grew his passion for food as a child in Korea and Hawaii where he, like so many talented cooks, learned to cook beside his mother. His CV includes time spent alongside an impressive list of Asian culinary masters, including celebrity Iron Chef Makota Okuwa.

It’s no surprise then that at Chef Mun’s underground space, an authentic and tasty mash-up of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and Californian cuisines are impeccably paired with one-of-a-kind Argentine wines. Soba noodle soup in shiitake shoyu broth with bok choy, crispy wonton noodles and quail eggs is paired with a Rama Negra Sauvignon Blanc 2009. An AVE Premium Torrontés is served alongside Chilean salmon & Ecuadorian shrimp maki sushi and spicy tuna on pan-fried crispy rice.

Though fusion Asian cuisine has been on the rise in Buenos Aires, Casa Mun is a welcome addition to the closed-door scene and their mouth-watering five course tasting menu is definitely not something you’d easily find in this city. So head underground and off-the-beaten-path for one of the best eating experiences in town; you won’t regret it.

The big map of Buenos Aires that I have is covered in squiggly yellow highlighter lines marking the streets that Annette and I have walked. After a couple years of street walking (in the non-prostitute sense of the term), I began noticing a particular street artist whose style was different to anything I’d seen previously on walls.

Then I was exiting the subway and saw a guy on a ladder putting lines on a wall. He was just beginning the design, but the style looked familiar, so I approached him with my camera in hand and asked him, ‘Did you create this?’, showing him a photo of the piece that first caught my attention nearly a year before. He took a while to answer. I think he was trying to decide whether I was looking to blame or compliment him.

It was indeed the artist whose work I’d appreciated as we walked the squiggly yellow lines of the streets of Buenos Aires. His nickname is Aires Mart and here are a few of his contributions to this intriguing city.

Buenos Aires, Argentina. If images of steaks and tango come to mind you’re not alone. But there is so much more to this vibrant city, teeming with creativity, energy, and cool. So, The Urban Grocer went on a quest to uncover it. The result? A new kind of television tailored to young urban foodies, artists, and travelers where everything from the posh to the underground, the main stream to the off-the-beaten path is explored.

Think speakeasy bars, supper clubs, graffiti-laden restaurants, and one Uruguayan hipster who grills up masterpieces that’ll make your jaw drop. Add a boozy dinner, tantalizing helado, and the hottest barman since Tom Cruise in Cocktail and you’ve got The Urban Grocer in Buenos Aires. Curious? Then break open a bottle of Argentine wine and check out the premiere on the Cooking Channel, April 10 at 8pm ET/5pm PT.

By day, Buenos Aires is awash with super stylish, well-heeled porteños going about their daily business: shopping, chatting on their cells, or tucking into scrumptious steaks bigger than their designer handbags. After dark, in fact, way after dark, as is the Argentine way, you’ll find a fair few of the city’s beautiful people head to a gorgeous and dimly lit wine bar in the stylish barrio of Recoleta. With its funky interior and decadent wine list, you’ll never find yourself short of a tipple — or a pleasant view — at Gran Bar Danzon.

If you’re stuck for choice, the manager and sommelier Damian Alonso will happily recommend a beverage to tickle your fancy, and if the mood takes you, there’s also a dining area where chef, Martin Arrieta, serves up delectable dishes like salmon ceviche with celery sorbet, lamb carpaccio with truffles and parmesan icecream, and crispy duck confit with mashed carrots, spicy blueberries and salted pistachios. Being in Buenos Aires, dinner at Gran Bar Danzon won’t really kick off until at least 10pm — so if this delicious menu doesn’t lead to you ordering more dishes than you can possibly handle, hunger definitely will!

Located on a tree-lined residential street in Buenos Aires, Tegui is a standout restaurant in this city of impressive up-and-coming eateries. But if you didn’t know it was there, you’d probably walk right past it. Against the bright, poppy street art that is essentially this restaurant’s façade, the discreet black entrance door is nearly lost. Luckily, if you know what’re looking for then a stellar culinary experience waits on the other side.

Behind that sly door, an outside courtyard boasts vivid banana trees, which are beautifully juxtaposed against a black and white sleek interior. A steel open kitchen allows guests – limited to 45 at a time – an intimate first-hand look at the talent and preparation behind their meals. And just who is this talent? Gérman Martitegui.

With a few restaurants in Buenos Aires already under his belt — and one in Madrid too — Chef Martitegui aimed to do something different with Tegui. Here, he takes a stunning contemporary spin on traditional Argentine eats. Take the traditional asado, for instance. Through employing modern techniques and clever flavor combinations, the chef brings classic favorites to a totally out-of-this-world place. Yet, the tastes, scents, and textures of this well-loved culinary tradition are still very present on the plate – think crispy roasted pork cooked sous-vide, or charcoal-infused mashed potatoes. So if you find yourself in Buenos Aires, then be sure to do what you can to find your way to Tegui.

Edible Tales is a culinary concept that calls on diners to become active participants in ‘an unusually tasty experience’. The brainchild of food writers/ creatives, Rachel Khoo and Frankie Unsworth, Edible Tales is all about bringing strangers together in intimate pop-up events for a flash three nights. And after two successful runs in 2010 – one in Sydney and another in Melbourne – Edible Tales is now set to debut its first South American incarnation in Buenos Aires on February 25, 26, and 27.

This time, the theme is set to evolve around the history of writing, papermaking, and bookbinding. Along with Argentine wines, cocktails, and a four-course menu, diners can also expect a plethora of quirky touches (think, edible inks and palatable papers). So skip the tango and head to San Telmo for what promises to be a stellar – and unexpected – treat.

Set in a hipster-laden neighborhood in Buenos Aires, Il Ballo del Mattone is a local hot spot where traditional Italian food is served up in an inspired, creative trattoria-like space. Run by the lovely and eccentric artist-owner, Adrian Francolini, this restaurant-cum-gallery offers up old school eats alongside dynamic, high-concept art.

At their Palermo location, the trendy trattoria is bookended with massive graffiti, brightly popping from the otherwise gritty walls along the street. Enter and you’ll immediately be drawn to heaps of spring green plants draping lazily over inner courtyards as the sun floods in, filling the space with an expected sense of calm. Inside, cutting edge art lines the walls where waiters — all also artists — serve happy diners noteworthy Italian specialties from house made pastas that’ll make your mouth sing to plates of artichokes, cheeses, olives, and cured meats.

A few bites of their tasty eats and it’s clear that at Il Ballo del Mattone, the food is as fresh as the art — and both are worth the experience.

Argentines love their ice cream almost as much as they love their beef. And the newest ice cream boutique to hit the town has taken this casual local favorite to new, sophisticated heights. Arkakao – which opened in the posh neighborhood of Recoleta earlier last year – prides itself on making fresh, natural gelato free of preservatives and additives.

All ice creams are handmade daily using a fabulous mix of local products and special ingredients flown in directly from Italy for a true Argentine helado meets Italian gelato combination. Stand out flavors are cinnamon chocolate, caramel flan and Sicilian pistachio, which are like none other in Buenos Aires.

The cherry on top — pun intended — is the interior. Set in a beautiful old-fashioned casona, the space holds two sizeable chandelier-clad sitting rooms as well as a stylish patio where in-the-know portenos sit back and enjoy this refreshing treat on a warm summer’s day.

I opened a solo show at the prestigious Centro Cultural Borges in Buenos Aires on Thursday. Called Water Makes Me Wet, the exhibition runs until the end of the month. I also just finished a set of window displays for high-end, Argentine fashion designer, Martin Churba, which opened last week. Martin Churba’s window displays can be seen at Tramando until September 6th, 2009. They’re co-related to the exhibition.
