It’s that moment when you reach under the table and immediately regret it when your fingers touch the crusty, dried out secondhand gum stuck to the underside of the tabletop. Old gum is repulsive, right? Think again. Artist Anna Sophia Matveeva has completely re-invented the “medium” of secondhand gum. She used the sticky substance to create the awesome, large scale pop art style portraits. Each piece requires over a thousand pieces of gum. But don’t worry, Matveeva had some help from friends. She didn’t have to chew it all!

Artist Julia Randall’s series entitled Blown is a dark and melancholy juxtaposition to our ordinary associations with bubble gum. Randall’s drawings are stark in an almost grotesque way, and they almost relate back to the fragility of the human body. Her work displays the fleeting nature of beauty and sweetness in the deflation of the physical form.

Maybe it’s because I’m regularly checking in on her profoundly candid blog, or because her work speaks to me in some uncanny way, but I’ve always felt a powerfully calming and comforting relation to the work of illustrator, Penelope Dullaghan. With a complete lack of pretense, Dullaghan creates softly textured images that amazingly, even when commissioned, still manage to feel as if they’re just as much a piece of the artist’s state of mind. She makes you feel as if she’d rather draw nothing more than bubblegum and desk lamps, and darn it if she doesn’t make you feel the same way.
