Brisbane-based DJ Sampology is set to dazzle audiences on his upcoming Around the Globe tour. We caught up with him to discuss the impending tour.

LAEM: The last time we spoke was just before the release of Doomsday Deluxe. What’s been happening since?
S: Since we spoke last, I toured the Super Visual Apocalypse show around Australia and New Zealand, which ended in a really memorable weekend at [music festival] Splendour in the Grass, and then came over to West Canada for the first time to play some shows. At the moment I’m in Calgary for the last day before heading back to Brisbane.

LAEM: You’re one of a small number of Australian acts playing the [Australian music festival] Big Day Out. How does it feel to be on the line up?
S: I had such an awesome time when I did the BDO tour in 2011. It’s a really great crew that’s involved in it so I’m looking forward to getting back and playing to everyone who comes out for a big day of music. I’m good mates with Nina and Mat Cant, so it’ll be great to have tour hangs with those guys.

LAEM: What can you tell us about the new single?
S: ‘Around The Globe’ is a collaboration with UK reggae/dancehall vocalist Serocee, who I’ve been a fan of for a while. In 2010, I saw him and Toddla T do a set together at big chill in the UK and I remember thinking at the time I wanted to reach out to him at some point in the future. There’s a bunch of killer remixes coming out really soon on the package and something else special I cant announce right now to come in a month or so.

LAEM: Is the new tour still AV/DJ?
S: This tour is DJ shows only. The last couple of years have developed into a pattern where one season I will do DJ shows followed by the season after doing AV sets. I have a big appreciation for being able to do both and I had been travelling around doing DJ shows before I even started the visual aspect.

When entrepreneurial couple Antonia Kelly and Bradley Wakefield told me they were opening a cafe in Brisbane, I immediately got excited. The two of them have been involved in a swag of venues and initiatives in Brisbane over the years, including the well known Good Guide and Brunswick Social dumpling bar.

With PUK Espresso they have endeavoured to create a cafe that serves great coffee first and foremost, and they have far exceeded this goal. Located under a heritage listed fig tree on Main Street, Kangaroo Point, the pair dish out their signature blend of coffee made up of Australian Green Cauldron, Ethiopian, Indian and Costa Rican beans. It’s the sort of coffee you’ll end up judging everything else against. Apparently an attached art gallery isn’t too far off, either.

Want a middleman to seek out all the music you never have time to take the time risk to randomly click and listen for yourself on Youtube? I found one. Sonic Masala is a music blog born in the heart of London. Two music loving drunks decided over an early morning curry that they spend so much time talking about music, it was time to write about it, then share it. So they did. I love it.

I’m not a new music risk taker. Outside of the odd random find, I only listen to new stuff on recommendation. One half of Sonic Masala, writer Brendan Telford, has recently moved to Brisbane (my home town), so its especially a treat to find so much local music amongst the global finds. Sonic doesn’t pastel things down, or over-hype bands. But they continue to prompt me to listen to music I would never have found.

Are you in love at the moment? This question often warrants a complicated response because, well, love is more than a four letter word. Brisbane-based artist, Rebecca McIntosh, has invested a large part of her life asking this question in the name of public art. Love TV sees McIntosh dressed as the goddess of love, Aphrodite, conducting a series of interviews with musicians, artists, celebrities, actors, local heroes, and, of course, the public.

It is through these intimate and awkwardly fascinating conversations with guests such as funny man Noel Feilding, musician Katie Noonan, actor Rutger Hauer, and media personality John Safran, amongst others, that McIntosh has been able to crack open the heart of the people and the places that she and Aphrodite visit.

Conversations from inside her bright pink, TV-shaped mobile theatre are blasted onto public screens so that the general public can join the conversation, as well as find out whether Noel is single. He’s not, sadly. Love TV hits Brisbane’s iconic postcode 4101 this month before hitting New York for the Summer.

Having trouble finding what you’re after in the dating world? Brisbane girl Courtney Beck is, so she decided to harness the power of the web and social media to find herself a girl. And so the Tumblr Blog, Reasons to Date Courtney Beck, was born: ‘Lipsticks, femmes, straight girls, bi girls, I know what sort of women I like, but where are they in Brisbane? Reasons to Date Courtney Beck is my way of trying to find them, and date them. Who am I? I’m Courtney, 29, single for a year and a half, and my friends think it’s time i started bringing some girls to dinner’.

Courtney, one of our contributors, is documenting her journey on-line for all of us to experience, and all you’ve got to do to take part (other than being female) is submit a photo and why you think you and Courtney would hit it off on a date. Courtney is not limiting her search to her home town. With planes, buses and Skype, she believes that distance will not limit her search for the right girl.

You’ve heard of a bird on a wire, right? New art entitled Here To Ear (v.13) 2010, by French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot, is currently installed at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane. The installation is both intensely seductive and aesthetically beautiful, whilst providing a fabulous re-use for thousands of wire coat hangers.

It works like this: right before your eyes, dozens of tiny finches (each a work of art in its own right) alight on coat hangers that hang in pods from the gallery ceiling. The movement of each bird triggers a sound. By capturing the movement of the finches and letting these random notes mingle with the birds’ own singing, Boursier-Mougenot has given us a great privilege, allowing us to briefly become part of their natural world.

Plenty of fashion-PR-spam floods my inbox as we transcend into a new wardrobe season, but this week one Look Book caught my eye. New kid on the block streetwear label, One Hundred, launched this week in Brisbane with the mantra that the humble t-shirt should become an individualistic canvas.

I had stylist-envy over the fashion imagery for their first volume, The End Is Near, mainly because their concept was so simple yet clever — featuring gold spray-painted keyboards, skateboards, beer bottles and skulls as shimmering props throughout. Each design is produced in limited edition runs of 100 (hence the name) and every tee comes gift boxed and hand-numbered, making every piece a wearable collectible.

Forget everything you know about death metal. Forget there’s even a genre called death metal. Brisbane-based quintet Portal just made it completely irrelevant with their latest album, Swarth. Their avalanche of muddy, raspy, blown-out noise sounds like a thousand Roman torture devices used at once in a cave during an earthquake — sawing, crunching, growling, clanging, and evoking pretty much every bad thought you’ve ever had, every moment of agony. No clear riffs. No blast beats. Just unbridled, yet murderously and coldly precise mayhem. These guys are not to be messed with. There is no more bar to be set. It’s over. It’s done.

I love the subtle acoustic finger-picking which weaves delicately into the wistful storytelling lyrics on the track, Brown Shoes, by Australian songwriter Ange Takats. In the tradition of local female-fronted acts such as Blanche DuBois and New Buffalo, Takats creates a sparse instrumental base, the repetitive guitar motif providing the perfect accompaniment to her elegant and timeless vocals. The artwork for her album — Aniseed Tea — on which this track appears is equally as impressive, the work of Brisbane artist, Danielle O’Brien.

Says Takats about O’Brien’s painting: ‘I’ve spent the past six months touring the album across Australia at various music festivals, including Woodford, and what I’ve noticed is that a large percentage of people who come to my festival gigs were initially enticed to the venue due to Danielle’s captivating artwork, which I featured on all my gig posters. This truly is a case of two up and coming artists supporting each other’s creative pursuits and it is working really well!’ [photo by Alain Bouvier]
Says designer Jake Jelicich on his creative rationale: ‘I wanted to make thin, unique, comfortable tees that flowed and moved with the night. And I wanted the art to be dark, but sarcastic, mystical and inspiring, all in the same glance. These shirts are about long nights with good friends, being spontaneous, and letting the street lights guide you home’.

The perfect balance between shiraz and parmesan is what came to mind when we met Nat Denning, a fashion retailer and Michael, a retail shopfitter, who have combined to create Fallow, one of Australia’s most stylish and unique boutiques. Stocking the best of Australian and international labels including Friedrich Gray, Claude Maus, St Augustine Academy and Chronicles of Never, this boutique is a gem, hidden behind an anonymous door in Brisbane’s uber-hip area, The Valley. Fallow oozes style with a harmony of antique furniture and modern fashion. It is a rare retail space that has a soul and is an inspiration to those who come across it.
