I found out about this guy through his collaborations with Flying Lotus, a name familiar to any electronica fan and more-so through his work with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. Gonjasufi offers big breakbeats, with flashes of psychedelic made and found instruments.

The gravelly, wavering vocal style isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but his latest release, A Sufi a Killer, on Warp Records, is definitely worth a listen. The track Ancestors (produced by Flying Lotus) is a good place to start into Gonjasufi’s spiraling maze of delta blues influenced, lo-fi hip-hop.

I get lost in the beat-head scene, among all the Dilla wanna-be’s, sideways hats, and dudes who are too stoned to realize that sometimes hype is just hype. There is a dark substance to Radius’s work that speaks volumes about the city he trudges through, the way he lives, and what’s important to him that people hear. This isn’t just breakbeat with some loose soul samples. Radius makes melancholy comfortable in a way that few can. Repetitious melodies, lush layers of synths, and broken beats that easily invoke images of beings from outer space that could be direct descendants of roots dub culture. With four releases under his belt — including the awe inspiring Radiushead EP — his fifth, etc, will be made available by the good folks at Grittygoat. You might want to hurry, though. Breakbeat duo, Evil Nine’s new album, They Live!, is one of the standout releases of the year. They Live! is powerful second album after 2005′s, You Can Be Special Too, its gruesome lyrics paying homage to all those misunderstood zombies out there. The duo — Automatom and Pardytron — compiled a Secret Playlist for us, writing about their eight favourite songs right now. Their first selection? Why, Toto’s Africa, of course [listen below]: ‘The epitome of smooth music, words can’t express how much this song rules! When the synths come in and the drums echo in the night, I’[m immediately transported back to my youth. Some people might say this is a guilty pleasure, but I don’t feel no guilt.
