I get lost in the beat-head scene, among all the Dilla wanna-be’s, sideways hats, and dudes who are too stoned to realize that sometimes hype is just hype. There is a dark substance to Radius’s work that speaks volumes about the city he trudges through, the way he lives, and what’s important to him that people hear. This isn’t just breakbeat with some loose soul samples. Radius makes melancholy comfortable in a way that few can. Repetitious melodies, lush layers of synths, and broken beats that easily invoke images of beings from outer space that could be direct descendants of roots dub culture. With four releases under his belt — including the awe inspiring Radiushead EP — his fifth, etc, will be made available by the good folks at Grittygoat. You might want to hurry, though. Only fifty handmade copies go on sale this week.

Breakbeat duo, Evil Nine’s new album, They Live!, is one of the standout releases of the year. They Live! is powerful second album after 2005’s, You Can Be Special Too, its gruesome lyrics paying homage to all those misunderstood zombies out there. The duo — Automatom and Pardytron — compiled a Secret Playlist for us, writing about their eight favourite songs right now. Their first selection? Why, Toto’s Africa, of course [listen below]: ‘The epitome of smooth music, words can’t express how much this song rules! When the synths come in and the drums echo in the night, I’[m immediately transported back to my youth. Some people might say this is a guilty pleasure, but I don't feel no guilt. Riikka Sormunen’s paintings are stylised depictions of fantasy worlds. She also paints novelty figurines to immerse in these beautiful environments, where darkness seeps in, lending them unusual and thought-provoking qualities.

With its long history in poster design and with a younger generation of artists who grew up with both Eastern and Western European influences, the ‘new Poland’ is booming. I had a blast when I visited Warsaw about a year ago and met all the movers and shakers in design. My friend just sent me a link to Tymek Jezierski’s amazing comic works. They’re so fresh! The only problem I have with them is that I don’t read Polish.
The New York Times recently posted a selection of Mad Magazine fold-ins from the past 40 years of the magazine’s history. The feature allows you to actually fold the images to reveal the decoded message and picture.
Oh, ok, so now I’ve seen it all. Or perhaps, in this case, I’m not seeing enough. Japanese game shows are so much fun. Seriously.
