This is a first. We humans created a space-traveling vessel that just orbited Mercury and was kind enough to take a photo to send back to its creators. The earth and moon are the obvious bright spots in the lower left quadrant.
I love Geirrod Van Dyke’s work for his portrayal of our imperfections and vulnerabilities. The first thing that caught my eye were the bodies and the pools of light, but there is a sense of impending doom that creeps in and it feels like all the iPads in the worlds won’t do a thing to stop it. Baltimore’s Teeth Mountain create pulsing, shamanistic, tribal-sounding tracks from a bunch of floor toms, cello, mandolins, keyboards, saws, and whatever else they can get their hands on. The chaotic music they make is noisy, roughly-hewn, and impulsive-sounding, but that seems to be the point. They’re trying to evoke a sort of post-apocalyptic primitivism. It will be interesting to see where this collective takes their aesthetic.
