With one of the biggest singles of 2007 — Vitriol — and consistently amazing live shows, bluejuice are bright sparks on the Sydney music scene. With their Australian tour beginning soon, we put some questions to Stav, one of two vocalists in the group: Tell us about how you guys got started? ‘Jamie, Ned and Jake all went to school together and the former two had played in bands together before. Jerry is a killer keys player from the Blue Mountains and was looking for bands to play with as he’d just moved to Sydney and I kind of fell into the band. Microphones that don’t work; a bass with broken strings; musicians that can’t hear what they’re playing; the set gets cut short when a large amount of people storm the stage (myself included). One would assume all the above elements would contribute to one of the worst shows you’ve ever seen. However, when the musicians in question are Sydney’s bluejuice, it doesn’t matter. Put simply: bluejuice are the best live act in Sydney at the moment. And what’s more, their debut album Problems is out now and has just been shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize. Check it.

Films involving characters faced with an impossible choice never make easy viewing, an example being the Nick Cave Australian gem, The Proposition. A nightclub manager, played with understated power by Joaquin Phoenix, is the victim here, and you actually feel truly uncomfortable as his predicament unfolds. Set in the 1980s, We Own The Night shows a real nostalgia for that period — particularly in the costumes. Read more
As a child, I took piano exams in over-sized white rooms, on baby grand pianos that felt unfamiliar and echoed strangely as someone across the room observed me in silence. It felt clinical, intimidating and completely devoid of warmth. Last week, I started noticing upright pianos, some painted haphazardly, others respectfully untouched plonked in the most unlikely places throughout Sydney. There was one on the edge of the baby pool at the local swimming pool, with a young girl in a rainbow striped dress tapping out a happy but disjointed melody; another shaded under a tree at the park on the way home. Now this is fun. This 3D watch dial actually jumps to life. The dial is a modern version of the 19th century art form of lithophanes: carved porcelain sheets that, when lit, deliver astoundingly detailed images.
