Street art has always been a place for creative freedom. Due to its very nature it’s also a maverick art, with the varying and diverse styles found being part of its appeal. From Shoreditch in London where works by the likes of Banksy, Invader and Sweet Toof live side-by-side – enlivening the streets with their subversive and eye catching design, to Berlin, where they’ve turned the notion of graffiti on its head by using jet sprays with stencils to clean parts of a dirty wall, producing a new piece of art. Being displayed on the streets that are so familiar to us, it often remains hidden, as our familiarity blinds us to it. Read more
Milwaukee-based artist Kristopher Pollard has a new series of fictional rap portraits. Trying to match, or possibly exceed, the over-the-top style of any given rap icon, Pollard’s heavily detailed series of ink drawings add a few more names to the pool of hip hop extravagance. Read more
I think I’m turning into a housewife because I really love this clip-on bin by Jay Kwak Design that makes it really easy to sweep crap off of a table.
This entertaining documentary follows a group of seemingly clichéd American teenagers in their last year of high school. Through a comprehensive recording of their lives it reminds us that, when examining anything in detail, there is no such thing as a cliché. The naivety and hope of each student shines through, providing a memorable and accurate portrait of a middle-American high school. Read more
Melbournes laneways are cluttered with themed, designer bars. The challenge seems to be which is the most hip, funky and individual bar. Step in Section 8, an old inner city carpark furbished with warehouse pallets, patio heaters and a couple of freight containers, converted to serve you drinks. The vibe is fittingly low-key, with background music played at a reasonable level, frequently changing decor, and a variety of options to quench your thirst. It’s casual, fun and simple. I’m loving the wild and wonderful work of graphic artist Zansky. Working in silkscreen, letterpress, and woodcut, Zansky has his finger on the pulse of some acidic heartbeat, pumping out some freaky imagery for the masses. Read more
The Duchesses recently sent us a copy of their latest EP, By Morning, released in April at the Excelsior Hotel in Sydney. The atmospheric four-track cuts through the usual noise and delivers a rhythmic mix of guitars, beats and vocals. It has our Newcastle office surging (singing?) through the dark lows and the hopeful highs. Read more
